Crowley wants more parks in her district

From the Times Newsweekly:

Nearly a million dollars in funding has been allocated by a local legislator toward building a new park in Glendale, but questions remain regarding the location for a new public green in the community—or if there is room to build one at all.

City Council Member Elizabeth Crowley reportedly secured $900,000 in the current city budget toward the construction of a new playground serving men, women and children in the eastern section of the neighborhood. Even so, a concrete plan has reportedly yet to be developed between the lawmaker, local residents and Parks Department officials.

Lydon Sleeper, Crowley’s chief of staff, announced the allocation during Board 5’s Aug. 12 meeting in Middle Village. Following the session, he told the Times Newsweekly in a phone interview that the park would most likely be a playground for small children and their families.

Crowley says she is also seeking to create new park space in Maspeth.

Good for you, Liz, I agree. Unfortunately, Bloomberg encouraged the development of every square inch of your district and there's really not much land left to convert into parks. Maybe a greenstreet here and there but that's about it.

Land alongside cemeteries could be turned into pleasant walkways, with benches. The greenery is already there.

Otherwise, the obvious choice is to turn the LIRR Rockaway Branch into a park. Make it a simple trail similar to Motor Parkway, not a flamboyant, costly High Line.

That or cover the L.I.E. trench in Maspeth. Don't settle for a meager Greenstreet median. Be ambitious.

Yeah I'd be all for covering the trench in Maspeth however, there is no money in the budget for that. Also, Adrian Benepe has been sending out letters stating that condemnation cannot be justified to create parks. So I guess it's only to be used for land grabs that benefit private developers.

i believe she's trying to make a deal for a park at the saint saviour's site.. which they really need down there. will bring in needed green and a place for the children to go..

If Liz Crowley gets a park for the St. Savior's site, QueensCrap will be eating crow for insulting her all these years.

I would happily do that. With whipped cream and a cherry on top.

Let's see if it happens.

You'd think Ognibene would just be able to have lunch with the mayor and get it, though. Wonder why that isn't happening.

It's not as if Bloomturd owes anything to Queens Republicans, right? [extremely heavy sarcasm]

Instead of spending $5 million in taxpayer money to recreate a replica of the St. Saviour's building in Middle Village, why not put that money toward a park?

Why should the mayor eat with Ognibene? Didn't Ognibene run against Bloomy as a Conservative for years ago?

Didn't Ognibene make a big stink over people with buildings violations last year? Heard he is having a fundraiser next week at a newly opened business that has had some building violations of their own! When is the hypocrisy going to stop?
