Steps to the street

I received the following info and picture about 69-53 184 Street in Hollis and wanted to bring it to your attention:

"The fence around the construction at 69-53 184 Street was slightly open and I noticed that the steps come out to the sidewalk !! There is also a stairway from the front of the building into the basement, well constructed and the likelihood of a separate entrance. Is it legal for the steps to be abutting the sidewalk?"

Not completely sure, although I have seen them on many houses, both old and new. Here's a shot of 35th Avenue and 214th Street in Bayside, showing a lack of sidewalk and at the bottom left corner of the shot, you can see a set of steps going right down to the street from an older house.

steps up to a sidewalk are not a good idea. Pedestrians can wind up tripping on them.

Hey Crapper, can you conjure up the Laurel & Hardy short when the boys deliver a piano to a lady that lives at the top of a staircase? Now that was a flight of steps - must've been at least a hundred!

And guess what eventually happened to the piano.

Hey....if the city decides to take steps someday....
to widen the street.......guess what.....
they're gonna take away those steps!

Ha, ha, ha, to the proud homeowner!
