I'm sure you've noticed the new title photo above. It was taken from the Metro Mall's lower parking lot. The sun was setting behind Fabianville when the photo was snapped. And then when one proceeds into the shopping center, the crapfest becomes complete.

But perhaps I just visited on a bad day...

Farewell to a house that harkens back to the past.
Goodbye, stately trees.
Henry Fabian has purchased thou and you're on the path to destruction. There are no building plans filed yet, but one thing is certain: whatever replaces this is sure to be an oversized, out-of-character eyesore.

Crap hill

Between the Grand Avenue and the Woodhaven Blvd exits, the LIE passes by a high bluff. I shall deem it Crap Hill.


Its on the border of Middle Village and Elmhurst. Picturesque views of Manhattan mean only one thing - one-story houses being replaced by Fedders Specials with rusting balconies and odd angles! Enjoy!

This is sandwiched between the Metro Mall in Middle Village and the LIRR freight tracks.

How many? Dunno. Too many to count.

Caldwell crap

Here we have the typical scenario...an oversized corner lot containing two 2 family houses (with a barn) were replaced with sprawling megacrap. This is the infamous Henry Fabian at work again.
Take a look at how long the buildings are and how short the yards are. The corner house doesn't seem to have a yard at all. The small house to the east of all this was recently demolished and the lot subdivided; no doubt to make room for more Queens Crap.

Crap-O-Rama part 2

"Some Astoria outfit is building at 81-19 Caldwell Avenue, in Middle Village. This doozy fills up the end of an entire block from 81st Street to 82nd Street. There have been numerous violations and at least one stop work order. Naturally, this was a self-certified job.
Of course, using the old "doctor's office" loophole and the fact that the property fronts on two corners helped the developer get away with building this monstrosity.

The sidewalks here are narrow and it feels as though you are going to be swallowed up by this thing as you walk past it. They have had the sidewalk blocked for months so that they could build as far out as possible." - K.B.

Does anyone understand the business about combining the tax lots?

Next door to yesterday's debacle, at 69-40 Juniper Valley Road, we have a 16-unit condominium which replaced a beautiful old Victorian home. Henry Fabian, who demolished the Morrell House, also is responsible for this one. His plans called for a 12 car garage and 6 open on-site parking spaces. Do you see any? He also used that old trick of claiming a community facility at the ground floor. Middle Village doesn't have as many medical professionals as developers seem to want to accommodate in order to be able to build bigger.

The mangled mess of wires and pipes certainly is noticeable, however.

It's doubtful that QC readers will be shocked to learn that Mr. Fabian has donated money to Councilman Dennis Gallagher, Councilwoman Melinda Katz and former Councilmen Thomas Ognibene and Peter Vallone, Sr.

Cookie-Cutter Crap

These houses stood on the northeast corner of 77th Place and Furmanville Avenue. They were built during the post-Civil War era, circa 1870s-1880s and were two well-preserved examples of the type of homes built in the Middle Village area throughout the 19th century.
The two detached one-family homes were replaced by four two-family attached homes in 1996. Did they need to pour concrete over every green space they had?

We are in favor of cookie cutters here at Queens Crap when they are used to make delicious Christmas treats, but not when they are wielded by greedy developers who build crap such as this.

Morrell House

The development boom started in the 1980's as the horrible city economy began its recovery. One of the oldest houses in the borough was among the first victims. Here we have the Morrell house. The Morrell family were original settlers of Newtown.
Their house sat along a colonial road in Middle Village from 1719 until 1986, when a greedy developer, over protests of the town, demolished it in order to turn it into Queens crap. The city's Landmarks Preservation Commission helped by not designating this classic example of 18th century saltbox design.

The LPC's disdain for Queens is well-documented. There are just over 50 landmarks in Queens and more than 500 in Manhattan. If this house had been in Manhattan, it would have been landmarked immediately upon passage of the Landmarks Law in 1965. But, alas, it sat in a borough of working class people and immigrants who shouldn't celebrate their past or their architecture, so instead LPC said, "let them eat cake."
