Several residents of the Kew Gardens and Forest Hills communities joined Community Board 9 members on April 14 at Park Lane and Union Turnpike to demand that the Department of Transportation (DOT) make the intersection safer for pedestrians to cross.

According to Community Board 9 District Manager James McClelland, the community submitted a request to the DOT last November asking for either the timing of the traffic lights to be changed or for the installation of a leading pedestrian interval. The latter would give the green light to pedestrians to cross several seconds before parallel traffic, allowing for extra time to make those who are crossing appear more visible to turning drivers. However, the request was struck down by the DOT last March.

McClelland said the DOT denied the request out of fear that it would’ve further backed up traffic. However, several residents doubted that excuse, citing a lack of traffic buildup on Union Turnpike.

Who has time to protect pedestrians when there are BIKE LANES to be built!

How do these unelected bureaucrats just get to do whatever they like?

Car totalitarians have too much power. Just close off the boulevard to all personal cars until there is a proper process to ensure people can actually drive before giving them a license. Being able to drive around and empty block and park a car isn't enough.

I'm fine with cyclists, but as a pedestrian, I feel unsafe trying to cross when they wont even yield to a red light.

Time for cyclists to pay licence fees to pay for all the infrastructure they demand. Also, mandatory liability insurance, mandatory helmets for adults, Parking fees, etc...

Does that apply to two wheeled menaces as well?. One of the reasons it appears that scooters aren't the problem is, no one is tracking them. Nypd doesn't photograph them when they pass a red light or a stop sign, they're not stopped for going on sidewalks, and i know transportation alternatives weenies swear up and down it's impossible for them to speed. and once again that's because they're not being tracked or held accountable for their actions. Register them, license them, give them a written test, and a road test. and only then, a license , as long as they can provide proof of insurance.... and only then should they be allowed on our streets...

Yeah. Blame the bicycles. It’s all their fault.

>citing a lack of traffic buildup on Union Turnpike.
It's like they've never driven down Union Turnpike, that part is always backed up and never has enough room for cars or enough time for traffic to flow.

>Being able to drive around and empty block and park a car isn't enough.
Tell me you've never taken a road test without saying you've never taken a road test.

>Time for cyclists to pay licence fees to pay for all the infrastructure they demand.
Wouldn't that be nice? Drivers are taxed to the gills, and then cyclists demand they pay for all the barely used bike lanes that displace them.
