From the NY Post:
In a bid to rein in rogue cyclists, all adult pedal pushers in the city will be required to get an ID tag affixed to their bikes if a city councilman has his way, The Post has learned.
Eric Ulrich (R-Queens) says he is floating the proposal -- which would require a small fee -- because "there seems to be a double standard when it comes to enforcing the traffic laws. Bicycles are involved in accidents, unfortunately, across this city."
Ulrich says that many of his constituents are seniors and that "people on bicycles scare the hell out of them. Sometimes they can be an intimidating presence on the city streets."
Cycling advocacy groups said they'd lobby against the idea.
"We're adamantly opposed to any legislation that would require licensing or registration of bicycles," said Kim Martineau, a spokeswoman for Transportation Alternatives. ". . .[T]he deterrent effect it would have on cycling would be enormous."
Why would it have a deterrent effect on cycling? Because bikers would have to take responsibility for their actions? Because hit-and-run with an injury is a crime? Or is it the fee they oppose? I thought their mantra all these years was that if you want to use the roads, bridges, park, etc. you should expect to pay a fee. Why should they be exempt?

If your mode of transportation has wheels....then a fee should be applied. There are more and more bikes all over the 5 boros and the users should pay a fee. It will add money to the city coffers and maybe even hold down the RE taxes.
I hate getting nearly run over by bicycle delivery people! It's about time. Safety, as well as economics, should dictate the legislation.
Hell yeah charge them all, make them buy insurgence to.
These dam terrorists are all over the place !
Make it state wide ! The by-product of this law curb's the beaners looking for work from pedaling into the good neighborhoods.
i drive in manhattan during the week and find that the bike delivery boys working for restaurants violate the rules of the road constantly.
their probability of serious injury is great. the restaurant owners in manhattan should be mandated to carry insurance policies on each of these delivery boys.
Does this mean the city can fine my daughter because I havent registered the pink Hello Kitty bicycle my 8 year old rides in front my house in Glen Oaks?
I the problem. But will the solution give NYC another revenue raising avenue which will tax and punish the innocent?
The overly aggressive women with strollers on the sidewalks are the ones who frighten me. I've been clipped twice and once my dogs paw was run over.
actually saw a cop from the 112 pct pull over a cyclist yesterday morning on austin street
i drove by and laughed at him
want the same rights adrivers then obey the same rules
can't have your cake and eat it too
Well, bicyclists don't use gasoline, and don't pollute the atmosphere, so when they blow thru a red light and come close to clipping you and give you the finger looking behind. you should thank them, and write a letter of thanks to Janette Sadik-Khan.
Drivers suck!

Maspeth mom say.....
Licensing bike riders is a great idea. Most are reckless and feckless. I have been brushed several times by bike riders. An individual can be seriously if not gravely injured by a bike accident.
Bicycle licensing is pretty common all over the US. UC Davis, which is in a "bicycle town", requires all bicycles to be licensed.
QUESTION
How is an illegal alien (day laborer) going to register his bike if he/she can't register themselves in the first place?
As a cyclist, I support the idea of licensing bikes. I want to know more about the details of this particular plan, but I'm sure a sensible system is possible.
I have been brushed several times by bike riders. An individual can be seriously if not gravely injured by a bike accident.
Indeed, it's a problem.
But let's not forget that both the severity and quantity of injuries to pedestrians are a couple orders of magnitude greater from cars.
Yes we are well aware of the laws of physics. Cars are already registered and the drivers licensed. Time for bikers to do the same.
Pay the fee and GET OFF THE FUCKING SIDEWALK!
I agree with them licensing them and I think they should make them wear their helmets too!
They should also license laptops and typewriters.
The government needs to know what people are thinking.
This wouldn't be needed if bikers showed a bit of respect on the road, which they don't. So this is what we get. It only takes a few a**holes to ruin it for the rest of us and there are a lot in NYC.
Pay the fee and GET OFF THE FUCKING SIDEWALK!
AMEN!!!

They already know what you are thinking and they are not impressed.
the u.e.s.restaurant owners are the cause of illegal alien bike boys violating the rules of the road. the owners should be regulated by the city government.
the chickens have come home to roost!!!
they should pay the fee now that they have there own bikelanes they should pay they use the roads and dont pay a dime register them the same a vehicle and they should also receive summons for chaining there bikes to property that does not belong to them . Man up bicyclist and pair your share like the rest of us that use the roads
If cyclists should pay up for bike lanes then how about pedestrians paying fees for sidewalks too?
There is no vehicle involved when you are using the legs God gave you and nothing more. If you want to close a sidewalk, repair one, etc. then yeah, there's a fee.
Crappy- anyone born with wheels on the end of their legs instead of feet should be exempt.
QUESTION:
How is an illegal alien (day laborer) going to register his bike if he/she can't register themselves in the first place?
EXACTLY, They cant !!
Thats part the whole idea Ssssss dont tell the crooked Mayor !
Fat people should pay a surcharge for hogging up the sidewalk when they walk around. Same way they have to pay for two seats when they fly. Why should they have more than me ?
The person or company is taxed they must have sidewalks by city ordinance If I could charge people for walking on mynsidewalk I would to help pay for the cost of my sidewalk. If people wanna complain about helping pay for streets that have been made into bike lanes then they should pay who payed for that the state with money raised from insurance surcharges, registration, and gas taxes and tolls that's how the state gets money for roads and the federal govt from gasntaxes. If anynbicyclist can tell me how they help pay for the nbike lanes that cost millions I would be shocked but it doesmnot exsist.
The Mayor feels guilty flying around the world in private planes. He is destroying the environment. He thinks he makes things better by forcing "the little people" deal with bike lanes and ridiculous hybrid taxis.
The collection of small minds that Queens Crap attracts is amazing.
Yes, I totally vote for it. And for fines for those riding against traffic and for those riding on the sidewalk. One of them ran into me last month, I ended up with a broken wrist and he rode into the sunset with no problem. So no, I do not have any sympathy for any of them. This is about respect and consideration for your fellow human being and they got none. They are dangerous to themselves and to everyone else.

Queens Crap attracts only residents who have a genuine concern about the declining quality of life in this city.
The last poster is right. This item is about a transportation issue, the govt has been reducing traffic lanes to create bike lanes all over while we are being choked with congestion. When one considers how little they have done here, 3 new subway stops on the E line and that's it for the past 60 years??!! And that to replace an EL that previously extended to Jamaica ave and 179th St, that was actually a REDUCTION in service . And the JFK train with no free transfers and a $5.00 fee, of course that will keep the cabs and pollution on the roads, that's why they imposed that fee ! The corruption that always targets Queens.
I suggested this 3 months ago when my car was hit by a bike on Thanksgiving.
I don't think it will pass , but it should. It's the bad biker's who give the good ones a problem. Adults should also be required to wear helmet's and have flashing lights at night.
It will cost me $300 to fix my car, gonna wait till the winter is over. You never know what will happen.
"Well, bicyclists don't use gasoline, and don't pollute the atmosphere"
Your face pollutes the atmosphere.
"Well, bicyclists don't use gasoline, and don't pollute the atmosphere"
Neither do subway riders. Maybe they shouldn't pay, either.
Oh boy, Queens Crap is so bad and so predictable! Yet I still keep reading it for its humor value.
What's predictable about it? The only thing I find predictable are the bike riders who think they are saving the planet when they could be saving the MTA by getting their asses off a bike and onto the bus or train. Better mass transit means a better environment. A bunch of dopes pedaling back and forth does nothing.
Enjoy the icy roads today.
These are the same tards that say we should happily hand over more money for tolls, gas, etc. because we don't need cars to live here. Well, you don't need a bike to live here either. Pay up and stop whining, losers.
Sounds good to me. Somebody has to pay for the new bike lanes.
I'm not getting a Fucking license to go for a ride in the park.
It wouldn't be for a ride in the park.
Oh brother, here is another Dem expanding the reach of the goverment for "our own good". Where is the Republicans to fight this extra tax?
Neither do subway riders.
They emit gas, not use it!!!
the gop/conservative new yorkers have had it with the fools voting for self-destruction, and the democrat candidates whoring for the municipal unions.
they have left town to vote with the TEA PARTY OF U.S.A... remember in November 2012.
Eric Ulrich is a Republican.
I am a Republican I live in Queens (all my life) I ride the MTA to work downtown and I ride a bike(sometimes I blow the lights when riding). New laws and taxes are never the answer and wont solve the problem. The people who cause the problems will continue to break the law and not pay for the license. As usual the middle class will bear the burden and the law makers will be encouraged to make new stupid laws and taxes.
"As usual the middle class will bear the burden and the law makers will be encouraged to make new stupid laws and taxes."
What's wrong with making the consumer pay? in this case the biker wanted special lanes to make biking safer - they got em! Now pay for them!
I believe many bike riders ride on the sidewalk because of the crazy drivers that have hit them or get very close to hitting them b/c there are no bike lanes.
Also, bike riders cut lights mostly to avoid interacting with the cars waiting at the light and fighting for the lane.
Finally, why should bike riders have to register their bikes when bike lanes are few and far between, especially in the outer boroughs?
