Biking to work on Queens Boulevard

It was bike to work day Friday so I thought I would see if other riders would be making the trek on the longest bike lane in Queens. Considering how perfect the weather was, very little decided to participate. Which is how it is every day on this route.

This is part awkward and part surreal.

Why would the NYPD use a bike rider emoji for what is clearly a motorcycle. Even if it's a miniature version of a ninja bike.

A brazen bicyclist whipped out a pair of guns and shot up a Queens red-light camera, damaging it in a barrage of 16 bullets, police said Wednesday.

The bizarre incident comes less than two months after an e-bike rider was caught on video shooting up a speed trap camera 2 miles away.

In the new incident, the bicyclist fired 14 times with a 9-mm. gun and let off two rounds from a .380 at Woodhaven Blvd. and Atlantic Ave. in Woodhaven about 4:15 a.m. Tuesday, cops said. The shots knocked the camera out of service.

The shooter rode off south on Woodhaven Blvd.

About 3:15 a.m. Jan. 7, an e-bike rider fired more than a half-dozen bullets during a major snowstorm at a speed camera at 86th St. and 158th Ave. in Howard Beach, cops said.

The camera was hit at least eight times but kept recording.

On Jan. 13, cops released footage from the device showing the shooter rolling up and opening fire and asked the public’s help identifying the shooter and tracking him down. He has still not been caught.

Investigators have not yet determined if the two incidents are connected, a police source said.

Queensbridge better bike lane path will be delayed longer

The overhaul of the Ed Koch-Queensboro Bridge’s tight pedestrian and bike lanes is being held up because city transportation officials are worried about causing congestion amid an ongoing rehabilitation of the span’s upper-level roadway.

The Department of Transportation will start work by year end to redesign the shared path on the bridge’s outer roadways, but the agency won’t complete the project until they finish replacing the upper deck of the 119-year-old span in late 2022.

DOT Commissioner Hank Gutman told reporters during Mayor Bill de Blasio’s daily press briefing on Tuesday that the new lanes would open as soon as early 2022.

“We’re committed to getting Queensboro Bridge done,” Gutman said. “The construction is proceeding and we will get as far as the weather permits us this year before winter weather slows us down, but we’re looking to have it done early next year.”

DOT’s press office later followed up to say their boss “misspoke” and that, while the agency will begin work this year and provide an updated schedule in the spring, officials want to wrap up the roadwork above first.

“Work will start this year, but the commissioner misspoke – it will not be complete in early 2022, due to the work that must be completed on the road decks. We will provide an updated completion date once work recommences in the spring,” said spokesman Scott Gastel in an email.

Gastel did not detail what kind of work will start in the coming weeks or when exactly it would begin.
