Following the recent suicide of a Venezuelan migrant at a city-run shelter for homeless families in Dutch Kills, Councilwoman Julie Won called out the negligence of the Department of Homeless Services and the shelter provider Samaritan Daytop Village.
Joined by Public Advocate Jumaane Williams and immigrant rights advocates in front of the Evangel Food Pantry on Thursday morning, Dec. 22, Won demanded better access to mental health resources and translation services at the shelter she would not name for legal and safety reasons.
“As immigrants, we dream of stepping foot on U.S. soil with great hopes and dreams of a better life. It is heartbreaking that John Ortega, 26 years old, took the long journey by foot from Venezuela and found himself hopeless in desperation that he took his own life,” Won said. “He leaves behind his partner and three children. John’s loved ones cried out that Samaritan Daytop Village did not provide mental health services despite their requests for help. DHS did not notify my office of John’s death and has failed to provide assistance for the family to have a funeral for the deceased.”
A spokesperson for the Department of Social Services, which oversees DHS, said the agency is assisting Ortega’s family.
“This is an absolutely heart-breaking tragedy, and we are working with the family to support them during this difficult time and addressing any concerns as they arise.,” the spokesperson said. “These families are coming to New York City after a months-long harrowing journey, in some cases, still reeling from the trauma they experienced along the way. We recognize the very unique challenges asylum seekers are facing and we remain committed to building on our ongoing efforts and interagency coordination to connect families and individuals to mental health supports as we help them stabilize their lives in a new country.”

demand more tax payer funded services. The person may have had mental health conditions before they invaded our city. All of a sudden we’re supposed to rush and give personal assistance of our time, energy and money. Yet we have plenty of destitute mentally ill here already that no one gives a crap about. Who’s crying for the NYC homeless? Not the Venezuelans.
We’re being brainwashed to be concerned for these invaders. Whose concerned about the white working class? We’re the ones who fought hard for better conditions for all, but we’re being trampled on and elbowed aside. Yes their death is tragic - but so is trying to make a living and find decent safe housing in my own city as illegal immigrants are given every thing that has been taken from us.
The suicide is a reason to stop illegal immigration & send them all back home

Most of these immigrants voted for Socialist/Communist governments in their home countries. When the free stuff is gone, what to do, Oh I know let us go to America for more free stuff. I am not anti immigrant, my parents came from overseas and they worked hard to give me a home and an education. They didn’t ask for handouts like other immigrants who came to America in the past.You have military veterans not receiving any help but sure let us give all illegals the support they want on tax payers dollars!

America (especially ny) owes nothing. We already paid our "reparations" by DONATING trillions of dollars and countless amounts of jobs over the years to all other countries in the world while our own people suffer. So I dont know what you're talking about but you must be on something.
Who really cares? They were better off in their own country. They obviously had psychological issues for a while. What If this person ended up to be suicidal via attaching himself to a bomb instead? Then we would have just had some terrorist coming into the country. Send them back to where they come from. I'm on City Island and the jackass fag pastor at the church is housing a bunch of these males. All they do is buy beer, raid trash cans, piss in the street, steal packages, then after dark shimmy between the poles, trees and cars and attempt to shim Jim car doors locks with simple coat hangers or hacksaw blades.
They move real slow like in stop motion film, they know how to avoid camera detect motion, RING doorbells. They likely learned this from the smugglers in Mexico.

I been around the country, seen a lot in my years with Alcoholics, Drug addicts, crooks, Fruit's and Nuts but these people are the worst. They are perverts too whistling and trying to chat with 12 year old girls going to school. I don't think any are sober or stable.
