Council Speaker demands funding restored for street corner trash collecting

The City Council Speaker called on Hizzoner to restore $4.2 million in funding for collection of garbage from street corner trash cans.

“No one wants to go back to the days when overflowing trash baskets on every corner was the norm," Johnson said. “We need those baskets emptied more often, not less. Cutting this funding won’t balance the city’s budget, it will hurt the city’s quality of life.”

City streets have cleaned up their act in recent years, with 96% rated “acceptable” or better last year, according to Johnson

Still, the seven community boards with the lowest ratings for clean streets are all in Brooklyn or the Bronx, the speaker claims.

What not Queens? The photo above was taken on a street corner in Ozone Park and Jamaica is still keeping up it's reputation for being the filthiest detritus strewn town in the borough.

To paraphrase those protests: Can't clean the city, can't run the country.

Too bad. You folks won't be save by Rudy G. this time around. Amazing his legacy lasted as long as it did in NYC. I remember when!

How about designing better trash cans. Non of Vallone's small mouthed cans. Wide open mouths to keep trash from falling outside. And a heavy base that doesn't topple in the wind.

I will ask this again, WHY do so many of you still live in this shit hole city. I moved out and could not be happier. Sure all cities have issues, but none have issues on the level of this crap and the majority of cities do not allow such nonsense go on for years or decades like shitty NYC does. The quality of life in NYC has never been good, but the last 10-15 years, it has been off the charts.

Soon as I saw the photo, my first thought was SE Queens, the biggest shit hole third world country. In fact they should be annexed from the USA and form their own third world country, because that is what it really is.

Exactly right. And it was still on the ground the next morning too.

Where are all the trash bins that were removed from street corners? All these heavy metal bins were paid for by taxpayers. Commissioner Garcia removed a large number of them because residents were placing their house garbage in them. Now you see garbage placed on the street corners with no receptacles in sight. She said people will not litter and will carry their garbage home to dispose of. What an idiot. The streets of Queens are filthy. Replace the trash cans back to every corner and you'll see a cleaner city.

Garcia is a identity politic hire and a moron.

That's the problem, people put all their household garbage in the trash baskets. They don't have to recycle or anything. The city's answer in the past was to remove the corner bins but people still dump where the bin was.I heard from Councilman Holden's office that Sanitation Dept. thinks it's hard to enforce the law about placing household garbage in them even if there is mail in the bags. There have been court rulings that went against the city and they don't think it's worth the effort.

As one of the commenters states,"WHY do so many of you still live in this shit hole city!" Likewise, I moved out ten years ago. Never been happier. Small town. Ride my bike instead of drive. Walk. Get my coffee across from my office building for fifty cents a cup. Trash cans always emptied, roads are great, no noise or pollution. Love it. Read the writing on the wall or live with with it. Corruption and filth. Crappy politicians. Not my kinda town anymore.

JUST HAVE THE CITY'S COMMISSIONER OF THE DEPARTMENT OF SANITATION WALK THROUGH JUNCTION BLVD, STEINWAY STREET AND MAIN STREET FLUSHING AND I'M SURE SHE WILL BE CONVINCED ABOUT BRINGING THE SERVICE BACK.

The only way to save this city is to nuke it.
Besides, nuclear winter cures global warming.
