LIC residents freaked out by waterfront rats

From DNA Info:

The city is working to clear Hunters Point South Park of rats, following complaints from park-goers who say they've spotted rodents scurrying through the waterfront green space.

Locals said they've noticed more of the unwelcome visitors in the park in recent months.

So make it a dog park for a few weeks. The rats will go away and the dogs will have a lot of fun.

You pave, concrete, and build over most of their habitat , provide lots of food and not expect this population to explode and show up all over...

One of the reasons the rich left the waterfront back in the 19th century was this very problem - the river rats overran their gardens and invaded their homes.

This compounded by the new ideas of growing wild unruly plants in public parks - might look good in an upscale mall, totally inappropriate for public spaces in NYC like Dutch Kills Green, for example.

The parks people know this - trash builds in plant pits, under cutsy bridges, and their bio-swale bullshit. Rat nests hidden in plain sight. Even if they go back to cutsy well manicured areas (and suck in and take advantage of a batch of gullible locals to do the cleaning the developers are too cheap to take responsibility) they will still have rats.

But that is the least of their problems. Sooner or later the rivers will flood again with their sewage and toxic brew of chemicals flooding all those cutesy restaurants and nursery schools.

Within a few years the cancers from living above a brownfield will start to become evident. And we hope that those developers will get their asses sued off.

So go hire a ratcatcher at a Renn Faire and bring them here.

Hipster Rats.

The developers got paid and have now disappeared. Their hands are clean. No?

They have a cafe right there, producing trash that sits out for several hours before being picked up. They are literally feeding them, and wondering why more are coming?

This isn't good for Queens on a whole. As the rats cross the river, they will spread through the borough - though some neighborhoods have decent feral cat and raccoon populations that might keep them in check.

I sense an opportunity for a pizza shop in Hunters Point South!

These amateurs making the choices, in both government and real estate, have a blank slate there.

How long do you think their mistakes and blunders will take to catch up to them?

One thing certain: they aint't their parents generation.

They are coming over on barges. The hipsters, not the rats.

Kind of cute poor little guy

Where are the millenial hipster entrepreneur's?

Rat kabob's? Rat burgers? Rat souvlaki? Rat on pita? Rat flatbread?

I keep hearing how LIC is cutting edge! They can get ahead of this.

Call in the pied piper of Hamlin.
WTF did the hipsters expect. The rats were there before them. Waterfront rats are a tradition.

Oh my! My nanny was upset by the rats. Clyde....we'd better move back to Kansas.
That real estate broker lied to us about the good life in LIC.

You know what the best part of the Pied Piper story will be? After the city refuses to pay him, he'll pipe and march all the hipsters out of the city as revenge.

Try 158th Street and 43rd Avenue in Flushing. Three homes infested, rat poison signs out front, blocking the "for sale" signs up and down the street.

There have always been rats in Kissena Park, and few home infestations here and there. But it used to get handled and controlled. Now they march up and down the local streets as we have lost control of our neighborhoods to REBNY. Civics with no power. Nothing but developers and mega dormitories, open pits in the ground waiting for Chinese government financing to turn into the next barracks.

No local pride. Rats = another indication that we've lost control.

Hotel turned homeless shelter and now an invasion of waterfront rats....as if the exorbitant rents were not enough to drive people away!

The city should outlaw plastic garbage bags. All over the city mountains of garbage is an easy meal for rats, stray dogs and cats, raccoons and pigeons. All that plastic is going to sit in landfills forever unless they are bio degradable type.

Most water rats in Whitestone are at least thirty pounds.

Hashtags will then be familiar with create
"groupings" on Twitter, and never having to affect the basic service.

Since city courses don't allow refunds, everybody thought we
would stick it out just a little further.
One rule of most graphic identity programs is that institutions must have their logos standardized; if the institution doesn't
standardize logo marks, the population could have
a hard time recognizing the logos and what it represents.
