Fake Buddhist monks live in Flushing

Angel Chevrestt, NY Post
From the NY Post:

Bands of beggars dressed like Buddhist monks have invaded the High Line and other city parks, demanding upwards of $40 from tourists — and officials are fed up.

The behavior of the phony Himalayan holy men has been anything but heavenly in Bryant Park. One was spotted last week swiping a plastic water bottle from a clueless sidewalk vendor.

Other faux friars were spotted on smoking breaks, trying to hide the unchaste behavior near a subway entrance. Two napped on library ledges.

The masquerading monks are largely Chinese nationals who return to Flushing flophouses with their day’s earnings, sometimes changing out of their robes on the subway, before gathering at a local restaurant for a meal that usually includes alcohol, according to one observer.

Real Buddhist monks typically shun toxins including cigarettes and alcohol.

Yep, the chinese have no shame. They cheat and lie and steal just like everyone else! Welcome to the third world- these are suppose to be our "model minorities" ! We didn't even have to travel out of the usa- the third world came to us!

Monks in Thailand often smoke like chimneys. I do not wish to sound like I support these fake monks, but you can't doubt a monk just for smoking.

I would think the attempted browbeating of tourists into donating money would be more of a clue that they are fake than the smoking.

What is "aggressive" about these monks' panhandling? Much as I wouldn't give these people a cent, caveat emptor.

No True Scotsman would approach tourists on the High Line and ask them for donations to Buddhist causes.

Don't knock it. Flushing's got fame. Fame from filth, lazy officials and crooked politicians who prefer to look the other way.
Then we have community bored # 7. This is a poor "overworked" board of political plants who enjoy their "prestige" of serving.
Peter Koo, where are you? Phony monks are better than seeing 3 card monte hustlers on street corners.
You used to have those shady nuns begging in subways.
I say if a tourist can be conned out of enough money to build a nest egg for a monk to afford a Rolex, so be it!

Anonymous, every ethnic group has people who cheat, lie, and steal. To assume that all Chinese are like that is racist and narrow-minded. But you knew that already... evidenced by the fact that you were compelled to hide behind anonymity.

Gee, I hope I don't encounter them as I will clearly then be forced to give up my money. How unfair!

Folks, I have encountered these people. They come up to you while you are sitting somewhere eating your lunch, hand you something that looks like a shiny bookmark, then scream at you to give them money. It's not pleasant, it's a nuisance.

Panhandling has been illegal for centuries, so I am not sure why people think this is ok.

They must be shown the door. Let's get DHS involved with this too.

Haven't they heard of this outreach program? "Men give women money, Women do not give men money". can I get a Chinese translation?

More sleazy Chinese who may have gotten religious persecution visa's and money from agencies like Lutheran Resettlement.

I was on the High Line last week with my wife and we must have seen two dozen of these creeps. And the worst part was every time you passed one interaction, some dumb ass French tourist had his wallet out.

Incidentally it would make a great video to see someone who knows about Buddhism confront one of these fakes on record.

They wouldn't be doing this if it didn't work.

It doesn't matter if they are real monks they shouldn't be allowed panhandling in parks where people go to enjoy nature and city life at the same time.

I see lots of these folk in Queens, but as they're not begging or acting inappropriately, I hope it's safe to assume they're actual monks.

Last week I was watching a softball game at Memorial Field in Flushing and an Asian woman dressed as a nun try to get me to give her money for a prayer card that was printed in Korean.

I shushed her away and she refused to leave. She loudly called me a cheap Christian who was prejudice against Asians. I shrugged and told her to get lost before I called the police and had her arrested for pan handling.

A minute later a middle aged Asian man came up to me and asked me why I was giving the nun a hard time and I should give her some money.

I stood up and told him to go have carnal knowledge with himself. I pulled out my cell phone and dialed 911. He ran away cursing saying he'd get even.

The fakes are being run by handlers. Find the handler and report him to the police.

A local extremely powerful politically connected developer once said, "I told Donald Manes not to bring in the Chinese".
Another time, "They are a lying race , product of a corrupt society".
Wouldn't you like to know just who said it?

LOL! The French, as a rule, will buy any lie. They make it a point of always coming off as being liberal. Noblesse oblige.
