"We the People" for NYC?

From CBS New York:

A system based on the White House’s “We The People” online petition platform is being considered for New York City.

The White House promises that any petition on the website that gets 100,000 signatures within 30 days will get a response.

Councilman James Vacca of the Bronx is sponsoring a bill to make a New York City version of the site.

Vacca believes such a system would help get more people involved with the issues facing the city.

Great idea! Love it!

Perhaps we can:

1. Ban catch and release fishing as it's a form of evil animal abuse and kills a lot of wildlife.
2. Prohibit toxic leaf-blowers - read previous QC posting on 9/2/2014 to see why.
3. Prohibit CHEAP, UGLY plastic fences that are going up at the property line all over Queens! Make people move them back and plant bushes in front of them.

Good! We the people want an end to illegal immigration and giving them free handouts left and right!

This is NOT a good idea, as it lets special interest groups pump money anonymously and diffusely into community-based organizations and other non-traceable channels to generate the outreach for signatures that force issues into the Council by proxy. Remember how many groups came to shill for the USTA when they wanted more of FMCP last year? What the hell do you think brought these people out waiting for hours on end after work to make sure they got their 0.68 acres? A love of tennis? This new tweeding route could become standard operating procedure to get bills onto the Council floor without anyone formally sponsoring and taking responsibility.

As flawed as the current campaign finance system is, there is at least a record, limits, and oversight into who's receiving what.

Are you kidding me? Virtually no one in this city has an inkling of what's going on in local governance except for a few good souls. The rest are those who stand to make a buck, an apartment, a handout, or something else for themselves by adding a new law.

You realize that it would be far easier to get hordes of immigrants to sign petitions counter-arguing to get more handouts given the typical civic apathy?

online petitions are still not admissible as evidence in a legal proceeding. It's a lot of crap.
