Feds may noiseproof Astoria school

From NBC:

The elevated N/Q subway line is creating headaches and a lot of noise for some schools in Queens, where parents and teachers say the learning process is being disrupted. Now there's a call to have classrooms soundproofed. Katherine Creag reports.

'some schools'? There's only one school building on 31st street, and it has been there next to the el for an extremely long time now.

Why was it built there in the first place ?
The train was there first...

What happens to the children when at home, in the backyard, and when not in school? How will the Feds soundproof them?

Actually the school predates the train, but its in one of those few pockets in Astoria that receives attention - while the rest of the community rots.

That is what happens when you suck up to the Vallones by renaming the school.

Now what are they to do with the 1000s of people living in new apartments next to the train?

Nothing besides collect rent.

Could the Feds please soundproof all of the homes along Jamaica Av in Queens, Fulton St in Brooklyn, and Westchester Av in the Bronx too? Hundreds of thousands of people live along these miles - long stretches of our city. Stop sissifying our kids!

I went to this school and had no problems -- what is it with these people -- the "Hipsters" are causing alot of problems -- you see this everywhere in Astoria -- they complain about everything --

No, they do not - and that is the problem. The are absolutely disengaged with just about anything besides their little self absorbed lives - look at WeHeartAstoria to see the this.

The hipsters are used to fill expensive apartments, eat and drink at what has become Fraternity Row on 30th, Broadway, and Steinway St, formerly shops and stores that actually had stuff useful to the community. Developers and restauranteers, all big political donors, love 'em.

The clueless apolitical hipsters are perfect for politicians.

When you have a community filled with Eloi its the next best thing since illegals.

Its just Gianaris and Crowley trolling for donations and votes people.

If you don't have it they don't have the time of day for you.

Why are the Feds involved?

We are already paying city taxes and this is a Board of Ed capital budget issue.

Washington and Albany is bad enough without using taxpayer money to buy votes - when another agency is actually responsible.

And will they soundproof all the other schools near the LIRR?

Of course Astoria gets special treatment. It's the closest to Manhattan so the officials don't have to go that far from their offices and still be able to claim they help the outer boroughs.

This is a good investment for the Joe Crowley.
last year we went to his office for neighborhood problem in college poin.
But he couldn't solved it .
People don't waste your time .he need to be change soon.

Two schools near the Hudson Yards site were MOVED. That's how things are done in the promised land! Surely no one needs to be told about the impact on learning when constant noise surrounds the classroom? As to apartments, ZONING requires sound-proofing measures for buildings proximal to highways, bridges, trains, airports... Dep't of Bldgs is supposed to make sure plans show zoning compliance - but in fact, could care less.

For roughly 90 years, children have gone to that school with the el next to it. It is quite a good school, and has been for decades. I know both students and teachers there for many years. Why they would suddenly be so traumatized by the train noise is beyond me. Use the distraction to study trains, how people live in communities, the nature of noise, or just ignore it. Tens of thousands of highly successful people did before, and they did OK.
To the whiny new parents-find a real cause that could use your energy.

More importantly Crowley and Gianaris need to do less trolling of votes and fund raising more real work for the community - they are gallivanting everywhere in everyone's business on the tab of the community.

They should also come clean and let everyone know what is available. Its an open question if their projects are best possible for the community - or best for their careers.

What about asbestos in this construction project? Exactly what is noise proofing?

The parents at other schools were kids have been stuck in trailers for years should ask why these parents get special treatment?

Do you have to pay off the politicians to get basic services in Queens?
