Someone's hurting cats in Astoria

Hello,

In December, our beloved community cats went missing, and despite numerous attempts to report the situation, we were unable to get help from authorities. Taking matters into our own hands, we started posting ads on Craig's list and we created a website (astoria7.org) and Facebook page (Astoria7). We soon discovered there were many missing or dead (but mostly missing) cats in Astoria.

We are not sure what is going here, but we do know that there is not enough being done to investigate all these disappearances. We have begun going to local community board and community council meetings in an effort to get more cooperation from local authorities. We are also compiling the many reports of animal abuse and missing animals, and we will be sending these to city officials so that they can see that there is an animal protection crisis in New York City.

Regards,
Mary Witty

Has anyone checked the Chinese restaurants?

This happened a few years ago in Flooshing - it was suspected that they were all poisoned by new "vibrant and diverse" members of the community.

Sorry to hear about your cats - people are evil.

Chinese restaurants is the answer to your problems.....I bet you that you're eating it in your moo goo gai pan!

Call the ASPCA Police. Oh, wait. Never mind.

I like cats, they are quiet and don't stink like dogs (although they shed hair like crazy but that's about their only downside).
These missing cats may be the product of a cat hoarder or neighbors that attract street cats to their property by feeding them regularly thus affecting their neighbors because these cats go thru their garbage causing all kinds of trash spillage. The cats were probably relocated by the authorities or killed by a pissed off neighbor. Moral of the story, stop hoarding and feeding stray cats and problem solved.

Have you given thought to the idea that maybe this might be a natural occurrence. It just might be a bird of prey has taken roost in your area.

There are no birds of prey large enough to take a cat. A kitten, maybe, but even that is not likely. Birds of prey eat rodents and smaller birds.

Don't worry folks, Community Board 1 is on the case...oh never mind

My wife and I rent/borrow live traps and catch cats when we find their populations are getting high, then we take them to a shelter.

You want a cat? keep it in your house.

And then at the shelter, they euthanize the feral cats. They are not adoptable. Bad move.

Isn't it more sustainable to get them fixed then release them than to remove them from the area?

I tell you it's very hard to have sympathy for the feral cat when I come home and I have to smell a Tom's disgusting gag piss-stink permeating my living space. They prowl about at times between my house and the neighbor's.

Bad move to euthanize the feral cats? Why?

Only the males that haven't been fixed have that smell. Trap, neuter, return fixes that issue. All the missing cats had been neutered.

I gotta chase after cats to examine their nuts? And then bag them in a box? I've got better things to do.

If their ears have been tipped, they are fixed. There are groups that will come trap them for you.

Outdoor cats piss and shit all over back yards, bring dead birds home, have flies and carry diseases.

They are good at rat and mouse control.

Besides, this is a Vallone initiative (look at astorians.com which talks about this and the latest taco truck siting as the major community issues).

Vallone is like a vampire, he just keeps coming back again and again.

Leave us alone Peter! Go to the place where bad dreams go.

Dear "Anonymous" cat haters---don't blame the cats. They didn't ask to be abandoned by people who didn't care enough, or thought that cats can get by just fine on their own when the cute kitten phase is over or moving day arrives or no one can suddenly find money for spay, neuter or vaccines. The animals have been betrayed in the first instance and betrayed further by communities who only want them killed, by people who are very sharp-nosed for animals' stink and transgressions yet are amazingly ignorant of their own.

You don't have to be "sharp"-nosed for those vile pervasive odors.

If you kill the cat another will come and take its place. If you have it fixed the population stops growing and it will keep other cats from moving in. You still have a cat, but it will be less of a pain to have around while still keeping rodent populations in check.

It's just great to have to pick cat crap out of my garden in the morning: come see my beautiful tomato plants festooned with turds at their bases.

'swunnerful to live in an ongoing floral motif shithouse.

Natural fertilizer. Leave it.

It's not "natural fertilizer".

It's shit on the ground.

Are you blind?

Having cats run rampant around the neighborhood, is a low-class, ghettoized, aesthetic disaster.

lol I was going to say that. But that is a lame joke.. shows ppl how ignorant and uneducated they are.

Thank you! I was going to say maybe because those are stray or feral. So make them scare and they will go away.

Maybe a dog fighting ring is using stray cats as bait....disturbing but it happens!
