Georgia Diner seeks to sell parking lot

From DNA Info:

A portion of the parking lot of the Georgia Diner, which years ago was slated for a multiplex and mall, is again up for sale for $24 million.

The more than 47,000-square-foot lot on the corner of Justice and 55th avenues, a block from Queens Boulevard and across the street from the Queens Place mall, also has more than 200,000 square feet in development rights, according to the listing.

The lot, owned by the diner, is zoned for residential and commercial purposes, and a potential developer would have to build either a residential and/or community facility or use the existing approved plans, the listing said. It was not immediately clear what the approved plans are.

A manager at the restaurant, who declined to give his name, said the eatery occasionally lists the land to see what offers come in.

"It doesn't cost anything to list it," he said.

From a tipster:

"The path of Horse Brook ran beneath the Georgia Diner parking lot. Expect construction woes."

Maybe that's why it was never sold in the first place?

Why would a non existent brook prevent development?
We need more housing and retail. We don't need no stinking brook to hold up development.

A non existent brook? Streams don't stop running because people try to bury them. It's called the water table.

What type of new shitty stores will occupy that development. For many renters and low income families they sure like to do a lot of shopping. Get some hobbies people like learn the history of your neighborhood and help clean up and maintain your houses and neighborhood. Instead only shopping is on your mind. Elmhurst has a lot of history, most of it can 't be seen because its been built over by crap. The area was farmland at one point with rivers flowing through. Many buildings there sit on natural beauty underneath. Hey if the Bronx still has hills and streams why couldn't Queens kept a few. Anyway more mindless people will continue to occupy Elmhurst, very sad.

Then how was Macys able to build across the street ? Or all those apartment buildings adjacent to the lot for that matter?

NYC is becoming too overdeveloped. I drive down northern Blvd and all I see is stores opening up then closing down within a few months. I don't see anyone going into any of those new Chinese/Korean stores on northern Blvd at all! I don't understand why we get so much commercial space but there's only so many drugs stores and restaurants and churches and clothing stores and salons that you can put in one area. To tell you the truth, I think the DMV should open up dmv expresses in queens.....like put one or two in Queens, I am so tired of having to go down to the DMV in white stone or Jamaica just to do something simple and having to take a day off of work just to do it, then wait behind a bunch of people who "no speak English".

The Horse Brook runs just south of Justice Avenue at that point. The apartment buildings do not sit on top of it. The Macy's Building was constructed in a way that it straddles it, and even that doesn't stop the basement from flooding. This property will not have that advantage. Many landowners in Queens have learned the hard way that fighting mother nature is futile.

Get hold of an old Beers map of Queens from 1873 and view all the streams and ponds that once existed in our county. You'll be shocked.

Walk down Middle Village streets on the north side of Juniper Valley park and see how some of the houses have settled due to them being built on a swamp.

Nice view of Macy's "Mrs. Sendek's notch" at photo's far left center.

Poetic Justice...Street!

The Georgia Diner property owner is smart. Sell off the back space and then when it's developed sell off the Queens Blvd. front for a fortune.

Remember what Donal Manes once said.
"Queens has nothing but land. I intend to develop it".
How true it was. How true it is now.

Think of how the Great Plains Indians felt when the iron horse cut through their lands and brought development to the prairie.

Hmmmm, history repeats itself in the prairie land of Queens.

True. When I was a kid and played Cowboys and Indians, I was wrong about the Indians being the bad guys.
