The forthcoming Columbus Day celebration (October 8-10) is one of my favorite American holiday periods.

It pays tribute to the entrepreneurial spirit of mankind. Even more important than Labor Day because if it wasn't for the entrepreneur there would be no jobs. Columbus Day parades give thanks to Columbus and subsequent men and women of vision.

Hail Columbus! - the Great Explorer.
Hail Columbus Day!! - celebrating Human Ingenuity.
Hail Columbus Triangle!!! - Queens' very own Shrine to Moxie.

CB1 the community board from hell is busy building high rises on the highway (HANAC put a sr place just to the left of the picture - yet another of their block busters plaguing Astoria.)

And 31st St under the el has high rises going up to!

Now who would live next to a noisy el or highway? Go to central Brooklyn or the south Bronx and see what Astoria will look like in 30 years.
