Council Member arrested at parade

From the Daily News:

A city councilman was arrested Sunday following a scuffle with cops on the sidelines of the West Indian Day Parade, a staff member said.

Jumaane Williams was arrested around 1:30 p.m. along with a member of Public Advocate Bill De Blasio's staff as they walked along a street near the Brooklyn Museum and were stopped by police.

"We had been given permission by a higher-ranking officer to walk on the sidewalk," said Williams spokesman Stefan Ringel. "But when we headed up the street, the councilmember was stopped by three officers."

"He showed his council badge and explained who he was but the police officer was not listening and began speaking to him in higher tones," Ringel said. "The speech got a bit disrespectful."

Ringel said a group of about 15-20 officers quickly surrounded Williams and his party and the altercation turned physical.

"At no point did they lay hands on the police officer, but the officers began to lay hands on them," Ringel said. "The staff member for the public advocate was tripped and pushed to the ground and both he the councilmember were arrested."

Both were taken to the nearby Union Temple of Brooklyn, Ringel said.

Did this "high-ranking officer" convey his permission to the cops on post? I seriously doubt it.

Bottom line of this unfortunate situation was probably a cop interacting with a man who has Tourette's syndrome, who didn't believe he was a councilman.

After they verified his identity, he was not charged. WPIX has an amateur video of the encounter.

After they verified his identity he was not charged. Well lucky for him. If he weren't a councilman, he would have been slapped with a bunch of charges. Remember the kid on the bike who got tackled then charged with a bunch of stuff?

There is more law in the end of a policeman's nightsick than in a decision of the Supreme Court.

This could be titled "When the arrogance of power meets the arrogance of power".

Councilman williams has always been an activist (housing especially) and I have worked with him for years. I have the highest regard for his accomplishments, intelligence, kindness, etc. etc.

Hope this senior, white woman hasn't upset any racists out there with this posting

If he wasn't an elected official he'd be in jail on fake felony 'assaulting an officer' charges.

Bloomberg's office immedate reaction was to lie about this and say someone punched a cop, when there's zero evidence of it.

Bottom line: NYPD Brassholes are out of fucking control, letting their people do whatever they want and lying to cover it up. It's costing us taxpayers well over a billion (that's right, billion) in court settlements when these things go before the judge.

The sooner Bloomberg Inc. is thrown out, the better.

NYC ought to suspend this violent parade.

Look at it's bad history over the years.

What does it cost taxpayers in deploying extra police, etc. to control these restless "natives"?

End all parades except for uniformed goose steppers.

The higher ups order the cops to not let anyone through restricted areas, and they never back the same cops when they do their job. Instead, they should tell these cops to believe anyone who tells them they have special permision to walk through a guarded area, and to let them through immediately. That way, everyone will be happy.

Hey, if you can't believe anonymous comments from someone on a blog, who can you believe?

That's good enough for me!

Hope this senior, white woman hasn't upset any racists out there with this posting

Oh, you're also white?

Even better!

Why should anyone doubt the word of an anonymous senior citizen white woman on a blog?
