Serial sex offender caught with kids

From NY1:

Joseph Denice, 24, was a volunteer religious instructor at the Saint Mel School in Flushing.

He allegedly used Facebook to contact a minor, which is against school policy.

The child's parent contacted school officials on December 31 about the alleged contact, and Denice was let go on Monday.

The Queens district attorney's office says Denice is a registered level-one sex offender who now lives on 15th Avenue in Whitestone.

Officials say he spent six months in prison in June for sexually abusing a 12-year-old boy between July to September 2009. The victim was in the afterschool program where Denice worked.

According to the district attorney, Denice forged letters from judges saying the boy had to have a "body scan" as part of an investigation by the Administration for Children's Services. Denice then performed several "body scans," which involved sexually touching the boy.

The Brooklyn Diocese said every volunteer goes through intensive training and a background check, and a diocese representative said a check was done on Denice in 2005.

However, no background check was made when Denice recently returned from prison.

NY1 also reported: According to the Brooklyn Diocese, Denice also volunteered at St. Kevin School in Flushing and St. Luke's in Whitestone. It was at St. Luke's where was asked to leave because parents became uncomfortable with how familiar he was with the students.

In addition to this, I received an e-mail from a reader who said Denice had also worked at World of Discovery Camp in Bayside and an afterschool program at IS25. But that hasn't been reported. Until now, anyway.

"He was part of the after school for 3 years and counselor at the camp for 7." - anonymous

The Virtus program that the Diocese has instituted is not helpful, unless others who are working with the kids speak up.
The program is about teaching teachers and volunteers to be aware of how molesters use their knowledge of kids to isolate them in an area and then abuse them. It also teaches you to never let yourself be alone with children in order to protect yourself!!!
Where were the other people who work at the after school center????

If no one else is watching or willing to speak up its not going to work.

All of these schools are near each other. Why didn't St Lukes inform St Mel's and other schools in the area about this creep. They failed the parents and the children. The Diocese says they put volunteers and employees through a background check.
Well if that's true his prints would have came up in the systems.
I volunteered as a mentor years ago for H.S students. The first thing that I had to do was have my prints taken and put in the system and checked. I don't believe the Diocese did this to this person. They will take anyone, as we can see. They're not very picky . They owe the parents more than just weak press statement.

Was he working there when Capua was there? St. Lukes that is, if so it would explain the "background check".

Anyway if he has worked in all of these places so close to each other, why cant someone from the neighborhood find the peice of shit?

What does his looking like a "Guido" have anyting to do with anything? and what exactly do you mean by "Guido"?

What kind of "judge" do we have here in Queens who would sentence someone like this deviate for six months (!) for violating a 12-year old??? This is an outrage.

Parents can't just allow anyone to "babysit" their children at any age. Get involved with your own parish council or volunteer for yourself and your child.

Be especially aware of volunteers who have no children in the program for which they are volunteering - thats the first sign they are up to no good. Saw it first hand at St Stans-scary how close these people can get to kids under the guise of volunteering!!!

Within BLOCKS . . .!

If this is true, I can believe that they feared losing students - their tuition specifically!

Horrific - sad to read this.

Hey Babs..it's true you can walk from one to another , they're all in the same area. Your right , it was about the money.

A "religious instructor" probably isn't a full-time job and "tuition" isn't involved here. It's more than likely that religious instructions take place on weekends. Am not familiar with either of these schools but this is usually why volunteers are necessary since few people like to work on Saturday.

On the other hand, what kind of "justice" do we have in Queens??? Leave it to a "liberal" judge to wreck what was probably some Fine Police Work and THAT's a travesty.

Wow! This guy is sick, but what is even worse is that nobody at any school or World of Discovery Day Camp noticed that they had a sex offender amongst their staff. What happened to doing background checks and checking with previous employers. Guess they just hire anyone. A true disgrace.

Sick is not the word for this perv - he has now stolen money from the St.Mel's parish - what else will be coming out ?

Holy Shit. I knew this guy. I worked as a lifeguard at North Flushing Swim Club, which the World of Discovery Day Camp used. He seemed like a decent guy, I never would have expected this.

Oh my God. I go to World of Discovery Day Camp and he works at the pool club we go to. I see him all the time and he always says hi to me but I never knew of this. Whats's sick is that it's a POOL CLUB- with children in their bathing suits. What a bastard...
