First 2 murders of 2011 happen in Queens

From the Daily News:

A 28-year-old man shot repeatedly on a desolate Queens block early Saturday appears to be the first homicide victim of 2011, police sources said.

A witness heard gunfire erupt in the shadow of a Long Island Rail Road railyard just after 5:30 a.m. and called 911, police said.

Cops rushed to the corner of 94th Ave. and 127th St. in South Richmond Hill and found the victim bleeding from gunshots wounds to his neck and chest.

The man - whose name was not released pending the notification of his family - died a short time later at Jamaica Medical Center.

Two miles away, a suspected drug dealer was shot to death just before midnight, seemingly becoming the last homicide victim in 2010 - a year in which the murder rate jumped sharply in the five boroughs.

Jamal West, 26, was shot several times in the back just after 11:30 p.m. Friday and collapsed on the corner of Merrick Blvd. and 109th Ave. in Jamaica, police said.

He died 30 minutes later.

Congratulations to the mystery man, quite an honor. I wonder who he would thank at the award ceremony were he able to attend.

I inadvertently drove past a crime scene at ~11:40PM last night before they covered his body and roped off the area. Very upsetting... (Police were on scene but I'm guessing they just got there.) I was curious to see what the story was behind the death so I googled and the only place that seemed to have any info was Queens Crap! Thank you for being so thorough. It may sound nutty but I needed some sort of closure because I haven't stopped thinking about what I saw... :-(

I believe it is a hurtful thing when a mother have to find out that her 26 year old son was shot and killed by some ignorant man!! It goes to show us that our generation of young people are crying out for help. There must be a healing that take place in the hearts of our young people. We must begin to pray for this generation like never before. My prayer is that God touch the hearts of the young mans family that was killed and that the gun man will not be able to sleep @ night until he is caught I pray that even in this that the family and gun man come to know God in such a way that it will have a lasting effect on our generation. Come on ppl wake up and let's bound together and pray for healing for this generation.

I do not believe that we as a people would ever feel good about somebody being killed. Jamal did not deserve to die! He was a good person. Whomever killed him has just destroyed his son's future!!! Until you lose a child for whatever reason you will never understand the pain his mother is going through!! DON'T LOOK AT HIM FOR HIS MISTAKES LOOK AT HIM AS BEING A PERSON WHO'S LIFE WAS TAKING FOR NOTHING!!! I LOVE YOU WEST FAMILY!!!
