WASHINGTON (AP) -- The U.S. Postal Service is increasing the pressure for dropping Saturday home delivery as it seeks to fend off massive financial losses.
Postmaster General John Potter is also expected to raise the possibility of higher rates Tuesday in a speech to postal-related businesses and officials.
The agency was $297 million in the red in period from October through December, usually its best season because of holiday mailings.
The Postal Service has previously proposed eliminating delivery six days a week, but got a cold reception in Congress. The renewed effort comes with a series of consultant reports supporting that idea, as well as other changes.

good idea. Now most carriers can have weekends off instead of sunday and a rotating day off
In my neighborhood, you'd never know the difference. They can shut the postal station down too.
My landlord has re-keyed my mailbox and I receive my mail at a post office box in my post office. How will I get my mail at all when they only distribute during my work hours?
If your landlord did this ,it is a form of harassment that could be construed as illegal eviction.demand a key aor call the cops.I believe the mailboxes are postal property.fight back,a be a man!
For clarity, it's only delivery.
The post offices will be open.
I'd be happy to cut back to 2 days per week delivery.
A service cut of 17% should be matched by a price reduction of 17% for postage.
What I find is amazing is how no one memtions how incompenant the Post Office has become, i.e, theft, goofing off, putting mail in someone , else's mailbox , etc.
As a personal example, we have a mailman who spends half his day gossiping with doorman, talking sports with a couple of tenants, going "postal" with senior citizens, ogling woman, etc. ALL PAID WITH TAXPAYER'S MONEY.
Thank you Rego Park P.O. from 1,000plus tenants.
To the previous poster...
Did you all do anything about this mailman?
If not then shut up or do something about it.
If you did then good for you and I hope you get results...
^ Taxpayer's money? You are misinformed.
5-day delivery is a viable money-saving option.
No wonder the postal service lost $4 billion. http://bit.ly/bUAy8C Their delivery system is terrible, and their service is even worse!
now obama and the government want to dictate your health care needs too. all 2300 pages of crap.he will cut $500 billion from medicare benefits for senior citizens. what a guy. the democratic party loves us.
