From the Daily News:
Barnett Ave., a narrow course between the Long Island Rail Road tracks and the Sunnyside Gardens Park, has long been a hazard to pedestrians because they're forced to share the two-way street with traffic, residents said.
Now, construction for the sidewalk - between 48th and 50th Sts. - will begin once the project gets approval from the city next month, said Community Board 2 Chairman Joe Conley.
"It's been an eyesore and blight on the community for years," Conley said. "It's an accident waiting to happen."
Because the road is scheduled for an overhaul in about four years, the sidewalk to be built next month will be temporary, he added.
Why did a simple sidewalk installation take decades? Election year?

Uh, not like a sidewalk is really necessary there anyway...
It couldn't hurt. Maybe the Phipps residents would appreciate it.

Really? I think it absolutely is necessary. Barnett is completely avoided by pedestrians (and cars!) because of the conditions there. It has the potential to be a lovely street, and a quick way to walk from the gardens to local business on northern boulevard.
You'd be surprised what a difference a sidewalk can make.

Hmmm, maybe. I guess there is always *potential* for lovely streets anywhere. But you'd still have to cross a pretty broad swath of industrial land to access those northern blvd businesses. That would be much harder to lovelify.
