Supporters of Councilman Robert Holden hosted a rally on Tuesday, Sept. 22, to encourage him to run for mayor — but were met with protesters who called on him to resign his current post, instead.
About 50 supporters of Holden, who currently represents Council District 30 (which encompasses the Queens neighborhoods of Ridgewood, Glendale, Maspeth, Middle Village, Woodhaven and Woodside), gathered in front of the Maspeth Federal Savings Bank at 56-18 69th St. on Tuesday evening.
Shortly after the rally began, a group of about two dozen protesters set up across the street, many of whom were members of the Ridgewood Tenants Union.
Many of the protesters cited Holden’s support for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and his push to close the homeless shelter in Glendale as a reason to oppose his run.
Meanwhile, the leader of the RTU testified AGAINST the Glendale shelter last year... Also interesting to see Holden's opponent Juan Ardila standing with people - who welcome him with open arms - in support of a shelter in the district he's running in and claims to be opposed to.
So far, 20 arrests have been tied to the shelter.
It's going to be fun the next few months.

With so many old time hotels in Manhattan closing their doors for good why not make them homeless shelters??
The biggest joke about this Ridgewood Tenants Union is that they supposedly hate gentrification (which is ironic when you look at who is out there marching and screaming) but are targeting Holden instead of Reynoso. The lion's share of the rent stabilized housing in Ridgewood is in Reynoso's district. The mega projects they oppose are in Reynoso's district. The evictions are happening in Reynoso's district. But they show up at Holden's house holding dumb signs and cursing while Reynoso gets a pass. Why is that? (I think we know the answer, and it has nothing to do with the Glendale shelter.)

Holden has been a target of the establishment left (old and new) ever since he beat Crowley. It's very strange indeed. Considering that he is one of a very few people in City Council that actually criticizes and condemns the Blaz.
They think he's a racist, even though Reynoso has done more harm to Latino people with his fecklessness regarding overdevelopment and rapacious slumlords.
And with the brazen contradictions by the RTU and Holden's shady fauxgressive opponent, there is something fishy going on here. However, the demonstration to draft Holden looked liked electioneering as much as a demand for new mayoral leadership.
Ardila advised Carranza on policy, was endorsed by Brad Lander, and is seeking the DSA endorsement. That's really all you need to know about him.
