Elmhurst site is, indeed, a cemetery

"Re: Past article regarding possible cemetery in Elmhurst.

I have attached a link to the nypl digital archives.

This is a map from the 1900s, but you might already know Elmhurst queens was founded in the mid-1600s.

And here's another indicating it was a Methodist Episcopal church with African cemetery.

There was a cemetery on that whole block of construction as the map reveals."

Regards,
Victor

Well, there doesn't seem to be any stopping of work. So much for dead bodies.

No Sh*t Sunshine!

Its taken MONTHS for you all to figure this out?

And its an AFRICAN Burial Ground to boot - quite the contrast with Manhattan's African Burial Ground... but again, its just Queens where the locals are always polite to everyone that takes advantage of them and nasty bitches when it comes to those who want to change things.....

It was formerly the 2nd Presbyterian Church of Newtown and earlier an Episcopal Church. Later it was a Baptist church that moved to East Elmhurst.

It was a black congregation and the church building may still be the old building mid-block.

Again, Crappy reported this months ago and no one did anything - in stark contrast to Brinkerhoff.

Every decade a few cemeteries are getting built on in Queens and we do nothing.

The old building mid-block was torn down last year.

Brinckerhoff Cemetery is in Fresh Meadows, where there are very outspoken civic groups, electeds who care and neighbors willing to get involved.

It looks like at least part of Dutch Lane Cemetery has been built over form sometime already - or am I reading the maps wrong?

You're right. I was trying to see when it was built on by using CityMap, but the site is down.

The African Burial Ground in Manhattam had been built upon as well before it was restored as a cemetery.

the area south of Washington Sq. Park was a burial ground ,for the the murderers publicly hung there ,in the past.

1870's smallpox epidemic victims are also buried there.see documents (burial plaques) of epidemic victims (caucasian, native indian ,colored and others)in the" Olde Towne Flushing Burial Grounds".formerly "Martins Field".

will N.Y.U and skateboarders be condemned also?

The 1924 CityMap shows the cemetery and the chapel as well as the "old mid-block building" that was torn down last year.
