Maspeth "Shanty Mansion"

From COMET:

Concern has been expressed by residents about a large number of boxes fashioned into a shelter by a homeless person behind Stop and Shop on Grand Avenue. The structure is near the railroad tracks, is unsafe and a fire hazard. The inhabitant of this structure also has placed several crosses on the ground, giving the illusion of graves.

Update: You're not going to believe this...

Our courts are to blame for releasing crazies to the public.

The tracks along this area has housed the homeless for years and no one has done anything about it. The Stop and Shop owner is responsible for their portion - they should remove and evict whomever they find there with the police on site.

Actually, Stop and Shop is not "responsible for their portion". This guy is on CSX property and the federal railroad police will be visiting the site today.

Federal railroad police? You mean city cops can't do anything about this bum?

No, our legislature is - they make the law, remember? The courts enforce it.

So much work went into that structure. give him a job at the Dept of Buildings!

the sad reality is that shelters are filthy places full of drug addicts, scabies, bedbugs and dangerous mentally ill people.

That dude's name is Tommy Lee? Who knew.

It's federal property. Unless it's an emergency (this is NOT) local police will not touch a federal problem. (And before you cop-haters start, this is in ANY jurisdiction, not just NYPD.)

Thanks for the correction. There has been homeless men from here to Elliot Ave making their shelters here for years. Now that Tank park will open in 2-5 years, this will become a more serious issue (already serious) with these drug abusers lurking about. Con-Rail knows the issues but does nothing but annual cleanups and shoo out these folks.
