Apelian pissed about EDC's plan for WP businesses

From Iron Triangle Tracker:

In a meeting with Community Board 7 members Tuesday night, the Economic Development Corp. announced that it plans to move five Willets Point businesses to the College Point Corporate Park.

According to the EDC plans, Feinstein Ironworks, T. Mina Building Supply Co., Sambucci Bros. Auto Salvage, Mets Metals and Flushing Towing would be moved to the Corporate Park and occupy space on two parcels of city-owned land. The EDC said it hopes to begin the public approval process on the proposal Feb. 19.

While CB 7’s College Point Corp. Park Task Force had been aware of the plans, the board’s Executive Vice Chairman Chuck Apelian voiced opposition to the immediacy of the plan contending it could quickly put the board in a defensive posture because of the controversial nature of the proposal.

“It’s not good Tom, it’s not good,” Apelian said after a presentation by EDC Vice President Tom McKnight.

Apelian, who chairs the task force, took exception to the city plan saying he was particularly irked that the initial ULURP proposal would be floated without detailed site plans and would address the businesses in two groups instead of separately.

“Each one of these businesses has it’s owns issues and each one should be taken up separately,” Apelian said. “I’m shocked that you’re telling me you’re going to certify this next week. Shocked.”

Apelian is upset because he and Board 7 have been betrayed and made to look like absolute fools by EDC.

Last year, Apelian and Board 7 conditionally approved the Willets Point redevelopment ULURP application, because they felt that doing so would ensure that they would remain "part of the process" as the project moves forward; whereas if CB7 had disapproved, then EDC would not consult CB7 as the project moves forward.

Apelian & Co., naively duped by EDC last year, have learned the hard way that EDC will do what it chooses, in the manner it chooses. Those who understood this from the beginning now are enjoying Apelian's "shock" immensely.

No matter Apelian's antics and displeasure with EDC, the simple fact is that CB7 is hard-pressed to disapprove these 5 relocations, which have been arranged by EDC and agreed to by the Willets Point property owners, and which are essential if the project is to proceed. To disapprove these relocations, after having helped to create the situation that will displace the businesses and that requires their relocation, is not an option. EDC has Apelian and CB7 over a barrel.

If CB7 doesn't like Willets Point businesses moving into the College Point Corporate Park, it should have carefully considered that before deciding to approve the redevelopment. The Willets Point business owners had presented their own proposal to redevelop Willets Point as an industrial park, with the businesses remaining at that site. Had that been pursued, College Point would remain unaffected.

Too bad.

Sorry Chuck...old boy...now it's your turn in the barrel.

That's what CB#7 gets for keeping their rubber stamp inked and ready to approve this Wellington Pointe fiasco at the drop of a hat!

It hurts to get suddenly butt-f---d without any warning doesn't it?

Now you know how it feels!

The real problem is that Apelian
has been a dynastic figure for so long at CB#7 that he's come to believe he's royalty!
