City will build senior apartments amidst housing projects

From the Wall Street Journal:

New York City has committed $500 million to build up to a thousand of affordable apartments for low-income senior citizens on vacant public-housing land, a move advocates say would help reduce the wait list for apartments.

The plan, first pushed in the proposed new budget by New York City Council Speaker Corey Johnson, will construct new apartment buildings on lawns, parking lots and unused land at New York City Housing Authority developments and other public locations. The units will be set aside for low-income senior citizens, many of whom already live in public housing.

“If you can get seniors living now in two-, three-bedroom apartments in NYCHA to move into new apartments, you make room for folks who are on the waiting list,” said the Rev. David Brawley, pastor at St. Paul Community Baptist Church in Brooklyn’s East New York section and member of the Metro Industrial Areas Foundation.

There are 207,000 families on the wait list for public housing, and addressing that number could help reduce homelessness, Mr. Brawley said. There are currently more than 58,700 people living in shelters across the city, according to the latest data.

What needs to happen with public housing and Low income housing is make those elderly people give up their 2 and 3 bedroom apartments that they have and stick them all into one bedroom or studio apartments. It's not fair that they get to live in apartments just because they had it since their kids were younger. Also, stop giving our senior housing away to foreigners. My ex boyfriend mother lived on the lower east side in an affordable housing complex for seniors and 90 percent of the building was Chinese. Fresh off the boat Chinese people who lived 3/4 of the time with their sons and daughters In new Jersey and other parts of NYC. Then they would get Medicare and more money in social security than what my ex bf mother got. How did they do this? I have no idea. My ex bf mother told me this after she spoke to some of the home health aides that took care of these Chinese people. She was a very nosy woman. 1/2 the building remained empty because these elderly Chinese people were always at their children's houses and a couple of them rented out their apartments to other people.

Fill in the projects open spaces and toss in the seniors so they can get mugged. Nice!

Yes, this all sounds like very accurate when your ex bf told you that he heard from his mom who heard form and aide....... blah blah

YOU LIVE IN NYC. HALF the people are foreigners. WTF.

Arnold Swarchenegger shouldn't be able to have senior housing? That is outrages.

Why is it all for seniors? Is this just to get them out of those 3/4 bedroom houses?

In my golden years, the very very last place I want to be is among the hardened criminals and lowlifes of the NYCHA projects and their pitbulls and guns.

Is it all Brownfields like the projects are built on? And prisons, jails schools, hospitals, public health centers, libraries, court houses and senior centers. all built on Brownfields.

Not when you're taking advantage of the system. Never worked a day of your life here and there are still HOMELESS VETERANS living on the streets! AND NO, my ex bf mother told me this herself when I was with him and went to the Building my damn self! And NO they should NOT be entitled to Medicare and social security after NEVER working a day in their lives here! Their FAMILY should be taking care of them if they want them here so much. Not taxpayers! And no Arnold Schwarzenegger should NOT be entitled to senior housing considering he is a millionaire!

Anonymous , you are in all seriously, going to suggest not providing senior housing for foreign born seniors . Almost 50% of seniors in NYC are foreign born .

Public housing for 207,000 families is Roosevelt island (9,520) stacked over 23 high
It be like the 1980s movie "Blade Runner" movie. Its just not possible, not even with todays engineering. Those people need to be shipped back to the states & country's that sent them here. Build this housing up State across the river.

All you people ragging on the person who wrote about FOB Chinese seniors-- I think the point was that these people are newly arrived - as SENIORS - meaning they have never worked in the US and never paid into the systems but are now collecting the benefits because maybe their children brought them over. Now they get Medicare, Soc. Sec., and housing, paid for by US taxpayers. Schwartenegger is not a burden to taxpayers.

Send them up to the Yiddish alps in Sullivan County. Must be 100s of huge abandoned hotels sitting on 1000s of unused acres. I used to play up there and Hunter Mountain in the 70s with the band. Some of those property's now rotting hulks are the size of Roosevelt Island with 100s of rooms, ballrooms, huge kitchens
Give that bleeding heart liberal Governor what he asked for !

What I don't understand is why must all these mental cases, refugees & homeless be housed inside NYC limits, why cant they go upstate where you have lots of cheap existing space and buildings nobody wants? Is the mayor stocking NYC with all these problems to both get more federal dollars and drive people out of neighborhoods he don't like or feels are not equally "diverse" enough.

Who ever defends the Asians that come here with the sole intention of milking the system for all they can by any means including hiding any assets can just grow up. It’s a fact. This is what they do. They have people who teach them how to do it. They look at us like we are idiots because we let them get away with it. Wake up.

The city will soon be broke and out of space unless it finds a way to take or make small one family homes to house more people by force.
I dont think there is any way of stopping this at this point, major chaos is coming to once quaint good old private home neighborhoods.

Yes. Look at what's happening at Blissville, where the homeless outnumber the residents. The REBNY overlords are chomping at the bit and salivating over their fangs to get even that little space to annex their tower pestilence.

And look at Ozone Park, where the bulk of homeless hotels and prospective shelters are being built have been approved in the last 2 years. The funny thing is Ozone Park is as ethically diverse as Jackson Heights is, but it's just not cool and too far away from the city.

As for the issue of fed dollars, look no further than the brazen lies they told HUD about the decrepit and hazardous conditions of the NYCHA buildings.

Uh oh here it comes. DeBlasio gearing up to grab all them old white people houses wasting space. The bleeding heart liberal courts will not do a physical eviction unless there is a place for the person to go.
They want to dump the old people in the 1 room barracks, take their homes and put large family units of 6 or more in them.

Question is: Does eminent domain allow this? I think this mayors making a case of the needs and safety huge numbers outweigh the few who are expected to die off soon anyway. Remember: And its proven we have the shit liberal judges to let him get away with such a Marxist move.

"They have people who teach them how to do it"

Where can I find one of these teachers aside the "how to get over" classes held in library's and community centers. (all in Chinese and Spanish of course)

I want in on the action but cant find one of these classes in English !!
I asked some lawyers only to find out even THEY do not understand all the bullshit, my girlfriend got evicted from her Blissville apt, then lost her job and should have at least medicaid. Signing into the healtcare.gov to buy Obamacare spits her out "you my qualify for blah blah "get a Navigator" Shit she she cant even afford an old Toyota, what F_ing Navigator?

No, it is high time we started tearing down apartment buildings and subways like they did in the 1950s. Tweeders want to build a city the size of Seattle inside New York to block bust our votes. It is time we didn't just protest the building, but brought down all the projects and put two family private homes there.
