Familiar excuses from DSNY

From CBS 2:

A Brooklyn block has been turned into a junkyard where public parking spaces are filled with wrecked and damaged cars.

Calls to 311 went unanswered. So CBS2 demanded answers and got action.

A frustrated Sheepshead Bay resident took CBS2’s Political Reporter Marcia Kramer on a tour of his block. He said he and his neighbors have been unable to park in public spaces for years because they’re filled with junked cars, like one with no motor and no doors. He said more than 40 to 50 calls to the city for help have fallen on deaf ears.

“They say they’re going to send somebody out… but no one shows up,” he said.

The block was filled with damaged cars and apparent attempts to beat the system by leaving cars on the streets with no license plates or registrations scraped off.

Kramer demanded answers from the owners of the nearby auto body shops and called both the Department of Sanitation and the NYPD. There were a lot of excuses, she reported.

This happens in EVERY neighborhood where there is an auto body shop. It would seem that Sanitation would make a gold mine off this issue but they'd rather send out bogus tickets to homeowners for gum wrappers that blow onto residential property. What a shame.

Familiar story same apathetic shitty response from authorities. Jamaica, Ozone Park, Richmond Hill, etc. etc. etc..

Nice Arnold Diaz quote at the end. But it is a shame.

Yep sadly it's TRUE. My father got a 100 dollar ticket for putting his garbage out 4 hours too early. Meanwhile, they can get away with this mess. The body shops should be allowed to obtain a permit for designated parking spots if they have no room and should only be allowed to take in so many cars per week into their shop to prevent this kind of garbage from going on. NYC is not short of auto body places that's for sure. Nothing is ever done to fix this city. Also, the department of sanitation, I'm sure also has their hands full due to mayor dumbdumbs policy of "keep building". He doesnt seem to realize what a burden hes putting on the city by building more and more and allowing more multi family homes and illegal conversions. This is why the city is starting to look so filthy. Last time I was down on the lower east side, it was disgusting. Also the upper east side has loads of trash stacked up to the sky with. Even bayside is starting to look more like flushing by the day, just not as much trash yet, but this will soon change in about another 5 years. Its getting really disgusting to live anywhere in nyc.

I don't understand why this never gets addressed as a citywide issue. Its constantly in the press and nothing happens.

As JQ said, SAME SHIT, SAME SHIT ANSWERS/RESPONSES. SE Queens is a perfect example, but as usual, nothing ever gets done. Do you see such stories in Park Slope, Upper East Side, West Village, etc. AND yet this city and administration say they are liberal and progressive, certainly not when it comes to these communities. This shit could end quickly, by shutting down these establishments. CAN you imagine all the ILLEGAL SHIT that takes place in some of these 24/7 shops.

Take a look at Merrick Blvd from Jamaica Ave till you hit LI, not only have the auto repair places taken over sidewalks and public streets, they have hijack an entire lane on very busy Merrick Blvd. Year and year after year and NOT A DAMN THING BEING DONE. It does not even matter if an elected officials from that area in Sheepshead Bay was to go on camera (which you notice, none did), because LAWS are not being enforced in such communities.

I mean how many times have we seen this type of news story over the years.

This story has been updated by CBSNY, the car wrecks have moved back to the autoshop.

Progress only happens when the bastards get caught on video. Time to get a gopro or a cheaper version.

Seems to me the companies posting those ubiquitous "CASH 4 CARS" signs should have a right to salvage....

Why the fuck is this? I'm constantly amazed reading Queens Crap how much money the City leaves on the table for not ticketing for actual violations like this that genuinely hurt the neighborhood. Surely there's money to be made selling those junked cars, too.

Why? Because someone got paid off somewhere along the way! Look at bayside with these stupid car dealers who are allowed to park any place they want. On sidewalks, in peoples driveways, near signs that clearly state "no parking anytime". They get away with it because someone is getting paid somewhere. Corrupt mayor equals corrupt city all around

There are a lot of crappy auto body shops on Atlantic Avenue from the Brooklyn border to the Van Wyck. The worst of them is Sonny's at 106 Street. They have client's cars parked for several blocks around, park on and block the sidewalk on 106 & 107 Streets as well as Atlantic Avenue, in the bus stop and posted no parking zone. What has the 102 Pct done about this? Absolutely nothing.

A parking enforcement agent very rarely ventures to Atlantic Avenue. The last time that one was spotted was a few years ago. She was writing a ticket for one of Sonny's vehicles and someone from Sonny's came out yelling "Do you know who the fuck we are?!?" I guess that she was new and didn't get the message that Sonny's had paid their bribe.

Doubt junked car is worth anything. It has to be towed or driven somewhere to be inspected and auctioned off I suppose. Who’s going to want to do that work? Parks can’t even be bothered to come and properly trim the tree limbs that can fall on pedestrians or a car which happened during a storm where a taxi driver told me some cars were hit by falling tree limbs. They’re like logs. My neighbor had his tree have all its limbs cut off but he watched them I think. I came home from work and just saw a few limbs cut. Very disappointed.
