Way too much money going to shelter operators

From the Daily News:

Ponder Mayor de Blasio’s priorities — and the goods he is buying with spiraling outlays on serving the homeless. The rapidly rising figures are astonishing.

All together, the mayor will spend $1.7 billion on homelessness this year, a whopping 46% more than just two years ago.

For context, $1.7 billion is more than the city spends annually to pick up and dispose garbage, run the fire department or keep the city’s drinking water clean.

That amount includes $1.3 billion to run shelters, an outlay larger than the city spends on parks, senior centers, libraries and cultural institutions combined.

...and yet, with all that spending, there will still be homeless people.

How about the City trying to award the homeless shelter contracts by competitive bid instead of using the 'friends and family' approach? That could save millions. Oh, wait, if the politicians pals weren't making millions to run these shitholes they wouldn't care about the homeless at all.

Welcome to the future, brought to you by the Democrat party.

Your retirement savings? You didn't 'earn' that! It is needed for the poor people who choose not to work! Hand it over!

It is so much easier when you are spending other people's money...

The wheels were greased a long time ago. Operating a shelter today is big business for not for profit organizations...

I think it's time to fire all the Police, right Blaz? And close down Rikers like your buddy the latina munchkin Viviverito, demands; get rid of all those racist cops and security guards, and give their salaries to the Homeless. That should fix things the way you want them to be, right? Problem solved.

Yes, but Comrade de Blasio has good intentions, and that's all that matters.

If there is a shortfall in the city budget, Comrade de Blasio can always raise taxes on the rich. If the rich complain, then Comrade de Blasio can also raise taxes of the middle class.

Who is going to keep up the costs to run these homeless shelters? The government can't even pay their way to all the crap that they have going on now! So I hope they don't expect to raise taxes just to pay for this crap and the raises that all of shitty council gave themselves!

What a waste of money. And there will still be homeless people all over the place.

Total waste of money. And, bums from surrounding areas are flocking to NYC because of its liberal homeless services. Just what we need.

Meanwhile, the roads are in horrific repair, costing taxpayers big bucks to repair their cars damaged by same. I just had a drive from Hell Sunday, up the Van Wyck during the rain, at night. The lane markings are practically worn away and cannot be seen in the dark, being non-reflective, and half the street lamps along the Van Wyck are burnt out. It was also flooded out in several areas. This is a very dangerous situation. Those conditions have existed for months now, with no repair. But, DeDumDum ALWAYS has money for the least productive bums lazing around and for illegals, who have no right to anything at all.

Ive been traveling the van wyck for years and when I want a good laugh I call 311 for the issues on it. I called on 11/26/2012 311 request 4514290 (yes it was made in 2012) for the lights out on the N/B Van wyck where it meets the whitestone Expwy. They said it would take 30 days to repair, and to this day over 3 years later they still sit broken. I called on 4/4/2015 about the pavement markings worn out on the N/B van wyck (311 request 1-1-1086689691). They said it would be painted in a future marking schedule, that was almost a year ago. The city just doesn't care. I keep all these requests because if I ever get into an accident I will sue the city for negligence, for not repairing known problems for years on end.

NYCHA, Rikers, and shelters are killing NYC's finances.

The outer borough streets are a patchwork of potholes. We have one senior center in eastern Queens. Our local library recently added hours, but it also has a cobbled together schedule without the same hours every day. When we downsize, we will move to Great Neck, where we will have a great senior center and a great adult education program, the fantastic Nassau County Library System, and then there's the LIRR station. I wonder if the LIRR Great Neck station has as much garbage and cigarette butts in front of it as the Auburndale LIRR station? I'm sure it doesn't! The quality of life is better elsewhere. All this money spent in crooked contracts, and don't even start with the DOE! Probably the above-mentioned city services would all cost less to improve greatly than all the crooked contracts out of the mill that now passes for city government

There is no doubt that the Queens delegation is taking a leading role into looking into the damage this does to communities.

Sure, they need to cultivate future democratic voters by attracting people to our city and sustaining them once they are here, and there is the need to keep their party stalwarts, who would be marginally employable in the real world, busy cultivating those future democratic voters in the welfare system of which the shelters play a vital role, but hell, the machine needs to do something because we are sure they fear the ire of the Queens voter.

I also believe in the Tooth Fairy and the Great Pumpkin, too.
