Crane collapse in Manhattan; deaths feared

From the Daily News:

Two people were wounded — possibly fatally — as a construction crane came tumbling down onto a lower Manhattan Friday morning, officials said.

The crane fell on at least one car when it plunged down on Worth St. near Church St. around 8:30 a.m. in Tribeca, leaving a person trapped inside.

How many of these events so far?
That's why I always try to avoid construction sites.
Buil! Build! Build! Rush! Rush! Rush! First finish the project. Safety comes second.
Eh....a few more deaths to make the REBNY moguls richer.
Just chalk it up to collateral damage.

This was fucking inevitable. Mindless upzoning by mayors fun size and big slow to build higher so developers and real estate can reap the profits from the 1 and .01 % looking to launder their massive loads of cash and assets.

Remember the sword of damocles.

Another Non-Union jobsite......

The greed is remarkable.

Bay Crane is Operating Engineers Local 14/15 UNION!

I have seen plenty of Union workers following unsafe practices, and shortcuts.

You speak of greed, I speak of the greedy AND lazy union workers.

Have you seen the Union contracts? Talk about GREED...

Does it say it was a non-union job site?

Does this sort of thing not happen at union sites?

Let the finger pointing commence!

Paid by the teachers' union dues.

Eva Moskowitz

Paid for in large part by tax payers.

Not greedy, right?

Sad that someone died. Glad there are so fewer construction accidents than there used to be.

Crane was blocked and secured properly however the boom was only rated for 20MPH winds meaning any gust of 25+ MPH would be catastrophic. This was pure stupidity and 100% avoidable.
They were replacing air conditioning equipment on the roof. It didn't even have to be rushed. Some peoples heads should roll and they should loose those golden pensions and perks to set an example.
These people get so much protection and golden parachutes from the union they operate like greedy slobs and dont give a shit about safety or doing any "extra work" like bringing it down and having to pay another day of permits.

1 dead, 3 injured, several cars demolished, 2 buildings seriously damaged, gas lines ruptured.

I'll say pretty sad statistics for the DoB, oh well they inspected the crane and it was A OK. The wind is at fault now. 20mph winds.
These jokers always have a pretty ridiculous excuse.
IS NEVER THEIR INCOMPETENCE!

Here is the video catching the crane falling down. All 565 feet of it.

Neither the teachers or the taxpayers had a choice in paying or where their hard earned money went

Wrong - the teachers voted for Randi in their electinos; Eva was appointed and kept on by the Success Academy board of dirs.

I can't believe that crane was 565 feet tall, what is that 10 stories? It covered worth street from hudson to church st.

And there are 374 more of these over us across the city.

And this specific crane had a complaint and was resolved on 1/31. The DOB is willfully approving these massive monolith projects to continue. It needs another purging. Preferably on the federal level. All they have to do is leave the building that is on the same block where the crane crashed (26 federal plaza is right on worth and broadway)

This developer and the operators must be stopped and have their contracts revoked. And judging by the various past violations these culprits committed, convicted.

And Mayor DeFaustio's crass and cold reaction calling this negligent homicide scene a miracle even though a man is dead, should be impeached or recalled. And those advisers scurrying in the offices of City Hall calling the shots with their cynical demented plans for that trolley and the we work style hipshit habitat they are planning for Governor's Islnad. This person is an inveterate spineless, repulsive, compulsive liar. He makes Mario's son look moral, although he is just as complicit since the Moreland commission clearly found dirty dealing involving some corrupt real estate co. and Shelly.

Funny, I thought that when there are casualties, action, enforcement and even arbitrary zero tolerance are immediately taken to thwart such criminal activity, like when a bike hits a pedestrian or selling loosies and k2, or when a cop gets shot. But as with the slashings and tourism, one casualty is a minor aberration when the culprit is rapid hyper-development and lunatic speculative real estate estimates.

@JQ

15 stories!

The crew was lowering it, apparently they lost control.

Seeing the video, it was top heavy, too tall.

'I can't believe that crane was 565 feet tall, what is that 10 stories'

Isn't it a general rule of thumb that its about 10 feet/story/floor?

That would make the crane 56 stories.

Not to thwart people from commenting, but what do overpaid school officials have to do with this story?

Wasn't Randy Albert Shanker's squeeze?
Now there was a real taxpayers' rapist...the original "Fat Albert"!
Teachers' unions helped to destroy NYC's public school system in the end.
O.K.
Before the unions teachers were not treated so great.
After the unions they became the tyrants of education.
1/2 hour breaks to scratch their noses, etc. After awhile abusing the system became the norm.
Many unions, that were formed to fight abuse , eventually became the abusers.

Yep. The old WTC towers were 1368 and 1362 feet tall.
110 stories, plus restaurant, observation deck.

Something is not right here, for this kind of a job don't the construction companies use tower cranes?
The mobile crane tipped over, too much weight, too tall.
Thanks DoB for a job well done (not).

Nothing. Some people just have a bug up there ass about teachers, surprised that a line of work where you deal with 3rd world immigrant kids in dysfunctional homes without proper child rearing actually attracts some bottom of the barrel applicants with no better opportunities. They think that legions of hard working people with a brain and a work ethic are going to come banging down the doors to get the job as soon as we get rid of the unions.

Just like some people on crackpot liberal NYC forums seem to assume that removing Pat Lynch and the PBA will open the floodgates of sensitive, upstanding police officers.

"...what do overpaid school officials have to do with this story?"

The third Anon quickly, ignorantly and incorrectly tried blame this accident, resulting in an unfortunate death, on the LACK of union personnel, and greed.

I did some research and found that to be a false statement.

Some people have their agendas, as do I.
HOWEVER, I try very hard to base my comments on facts!
Unless of course it is a sarcastic comment.
If you do not understand the difference, there is no hope for you, therefor you can go back to Facebook where the moderators eliminate free speech and somehow think they are preventing "offensive statements".

That being clarified;

I imagine the people calculating the angles, capacities, and forces tasked with the lowering of this crane most likely received a "wonderful" public school education from educators certified by the greedy over paid teachers' union officials.

I see how that worked out...
