From the Queens Courier:
Upgrades are coming for buildings at the historic Fort Totten Park.
The Commanding Officer’s House and the chapel at Fort Totten are set to be revitalized, according to the Parks Department, which oversees both structures and announced Aug. 8 that it is accepting bids for a contractor to do the work.
The deteriorating roof on the Commanding Officer’s House, which is used as administrative offices for the Parks Department, will be replaced with new slate shingles, and the building’s columns and cornices will be restored to their former glory.
Also, the capitals atop the columns will be replaced with ones from the building’s original design, and the metal balcony on the second floor will be repaired.

Fort totten is full of asbestos. The whole thing needs fixing.
Poppenhusen, Ft Totten, Onderdonk House, etc all getting capital monies.
Van Bramer is buying a building for a theater company and 4 millions are being spent to plug a hole in a diving pool for a theater that will accomdate at most a few hundred.
And Costa, Aravella, Michael, Joesph, Rose Marie and the local community stoically insist on the rights of those guys whose offices are behind the "Tacos Mexicanos" sign on Broadway to do the wonderful things they plan for the Steinway Mansion.
Astoria, the real face of Queens.
Astoria, the real face of Queens.
BULLSHIT, NO ONE HAS ANYTHING IN COMMON WITH THOSE PEOPLE - NO OTHER COMMUNITY BOARD IN THE CITY IS LIKE THAT COMMUNITY BOARD.
Just WHO are those guys behind the Tacos sign?
The Steinway Mansion must live!
The Willets Farmhouse, the oldest structure at Fort Totten is still in ruins. Sadly, much of Fort Totten still looks rotten.
Wonder how many current residents have a clue about why Fort Totten was even there.
We sadly push our history to a ruble heap.
All of Fort Totten should be a historic restoration. After going to Governor's Island and experiencing what an urban historic restoration can be like, I think that would be the best use of the Fort. Piecemeal repairs aren't acceptable. There is a valuable and rich history that is being lost due to neglect and greed.
Cheap spray on Euro-Stucco is restoration ?
It may be fine in Greece or Japan but will start flaking and look like shit after 3 NY winters like all the new crap along Bell Blvd and L.I.C
