Previously, it was looking worse.

Possibly the dumbest report I've seen on local news in a long time.

First he refers to it as an LIRR overpass, when in fact it used to be the Fresh Pond train station until 1998.

Second, he doesn't explain who owns the vacant gas station...is that LIRR property, too? If it's privately owned, it will rot for as long the owner wants it to. It happens.

Actually, it's not dumb at all. The bridge he was standing on is an overpass. The station is down stairs.

The gas station was condemned by the city for the construction project he referred to in the report. That was supposed to have been done years ago but then the MTA didn't have the money. At least not for that...

There hasn't been a train station there in at least 25 years, if ever. The underpass is just a thruway for the LIRR.

He should do a story on the Crap in Whitestone . Corner of 11th avenue and 154th street, the old Whitestone Farms store. Malba Gardens Civic has been complaining for years. They can make 11th and 12th avenues one way against the residents, but they can't get this mess cleaned up?

CB 7? Halloran? Anybody?

The whole area is trash.

The abandoned gas station and newsstand are only a part of it. The trashy strip malls, car dealerships, car wash, and Beach Bum Tanning only add to the depression that is that area.

From an urban design standpoint, the mistake is letting so many busniesses establish themselves so far back off the street line. This isn't the suburbs. Its a city. Parking lots in the front of buildings do not work here.

But they dont learn their lesson. They should have never let that bank get built there without it being right on the corner.

The bank is the least of the problems there. That whole intersection has always been a dump. The bank arrived after the newsstand, car lot, car wash, gas station, etc. The bank is the nicest looking thing in the vicinity.

On the contrary. That corner didn't always look like hell.

Here's what it looked like back in the 1940s.

Christina, can you tell us what the sign on the pole says: "Keep your side walk clean. Please _____ ______". I can't make out the last 2 words. Thanks

I moved from Ridgewood almost 3 years ago now. That Newsstand has been vacant since around 2000 and the gas station for just has long.

The Gas Station is LIRR property as well now as years ago there were rumors of a new LIRR hub and train station being put on that intersection.

Once they got rid if Fresh Pond Diner the area started to decline and fast. All the pharmacies, banks, lack of supermarkets, etc. made Ridgewood total crap.

I loved growing up in Ridgewood in the 80's, was decent living there up to the mid 90's but once the late 90's rolled in the area went to crap and fast.

Thank you. I guess there were slobs back in those days as well.

Interesting that "co operate" was almost like 2 words back then.

See the running board on the car at the bottom of the photo. There were a few of these left in the '50's when I grew up - the running boards fell out of automotive design favor at that time. These running boards where great seats to rest on when you were playing ring-a-levio, cops and robbers, or scully. Also, a great place to rest on with your playmate buddies on a hot July day eating a Popsicle or a Mr. Big cone or drinking a Mission soda.
