Decent chance your SS# is being used by someone else

From MSNBC:

What are the odds someone else has used your Social Security number? One in 7.

That’s the stunning conclusion of a San Diego company's analysis of 290 million Social Security numbers, which found that 40 million of them have been attached to more than one name. The study, conducted by the fraud-fighting firm ID Analytics, is the first of its kind that’s been made available to the public.

We first wrote about the problem of “SSN-only” identity theft five years ago, and estimated that millions of Americans were on the “secret list of identity theft victims” whose SSNs had been misappropriated by an imposter to obtain work or credit.

The IRS often knows when this happens, when the imposter pays taxes. The Social Security Administration knows, too, for the same reason. And the nation's credit bureaus usually know, because the imposter often ends up applying for some form of credit. Plenty of financial institutions also have access to this information.

But no one is telling you. In short, all these government agencies and financial firms don't think you have a right to know.

We're no closer to finding out who's on that list today, but at least we now know how big the problem is: much bigger than we originally estimated.

A model Ponzi scheme. Faites vos joues, mesdames et messieurs. We're now taking bets on when it all collapses.

Pretty sad that our primary mechanism for identifying citizens is so compromised.
Unless we use biometrics, we might as well assume we can't determine a persons identity 100%. (This I suspect is the way it was back before 1950 or so.)

Check your credit report early and often. Read your monthly statements. Know what's going on. And shred, shred, shred!

Secure biometric id's are needed.

This has worked well at Disney World for four years now.

There's a hidden cost in the tens of billions for not having this in place now.

The govt is hiding the fact your SS is bring used by illegals or criminals (both the same) because the ruling power need their future votes.

Homeland Security was going to come up with a national identity card with an embedded chip contain citizen and legal alien information to thwart terrorist gaining illegal entry or once in prevented in using standard ID such as SS etc to obtain drivers license, insurance or steal identities outright to conduct murderous activities.

Every liberal in America is against it especially Hispanic who feel it is used against their race. It's not if an individual enters the country legally.

So there you go, a bunch of terrorist are running around freely and the non-terrorists - the border jumpers are eating our benefits and lunch! Thank you ACLU!!!!!!!!!!!
