We thought we'd revisit the galactic-looking addition plopped on top of the existing three-story building at 509 Myrtle Avenue. Units went on the rental market at the end of September and the two-bedroom units were priced from $2,600 to $3,100. Then they all got pulled as of two weeks ago. Wonder why... maybe it's that pesky partial SWO still on the building?
I hereby rename this building in honor of our illustrious Chief City Planner, Amanda Burden.

Let me guess, this blog has a problem with this aesthetically pleasing new townhouse.
Why don't you people get jobs and lives and leave people alone so they can re-develop the old eyesores that are still left from the Robert Moses dark ages.
I can think of a few eight-letter words as well, Crapper.
It's futuristic.
This blog does not have a problem with an aesthetically pleasing new townhouse. It does have a problem with the ugly pile of shit dropped atop these classic pre-Robert Moses rowhomes, ruining the streetscape and property values.
An extension of 6 additional units without any plumbing permit? ...hmm

Obviously the DOB has no problem with it because it got built.And is still there,and isn't going anywhere.
Just because one or two rabble rousers from the "hood" filed complaints with the DOB,doesn't mean there is something wrong.
When are we tearing down the Queensbridge houses and all those projects in the Lower East Side (along the FDR)? Robert Moses was an idiot, all that prime waterfront real estate going to waste, destroy the projects!

When Robert Moses was around, those were not desirable areas.
We can handle a little more Brutalism in moderation. This isn't moderate. You see a lot of this style because it is boxy and cheap and maximizes the rentable square footage. In the linked docs, it seems it it zoned for six stories. So it's only ugly not illegal.
One of the industrial centers of the United States was Long Island City, noisy and full of smokestacks, and pre-EPA industrial odors. There was no way that people would look upon 12th thru 24th Streets as attractive waterfront property. Factory workers lived there and when the jobs left, they left, to have the apartments filled mostly by, er, people without jobs.
And, God bless Robert Moses for the World's Fair(s)
