Woman in basement apartment dies in fire

From the Daily News:

A Bronx woman died after being trapped in her basement apartment by a fast-moving fire early Saturday morning, authorities said.

Johanna Parliament, 60, was rushed to Jacobi Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, police said.

She lived in the basement apartment of the house on Gifford Ave. in Throggs Neck with her daughter, who suffered minor injuries. Another family that shares the apartment was away for the weekend, neighbors said.

The fire started about 1:23 a.m. It took 105 firefighters from 25 units nearly two hours to bring the two-alarm blaze under control.

When will the EMPLOYEES of the DOB that covers an area which experiences a death due to an illegal conversion be investigated for negligence?

Uh, how do you know this was an illegal conversion? Basement apartments are not necessarily illegal. Cellar apartments are. A difference that makes all the difference!

"Another family that shares the apartment" is the clue. Take a look at the Google street view and you will see there are no detached homes on that street with basements, only cellars. And the news media never uses the term "cellar" when it's really a basement. And most basement apartments are illegal, too.

I don't know why the Daily News reporters don't do what Queens Crap readers read and look up the certificate of occupancy at the Department of Buildings. Every rental house on my block has a illegal apartment below ground level whether you want to call it a "basement" or a "cellar". I don't see how this block is any different.
