Coney Island amusement park reborn

From the Daily News:

Many New Yorkers welcomed Memorial Day weekend Saturday screaming on the rides at Coney Island's new Luna Park or kicking back on area beaches.

Frank DeSoto, of Queens, said the sight of Luna Park at night from his seat on the Wonder Wheel gave him chills, "all lit up, noisy and new."

"I remember when you'd look down to this spot and it was a ghostown," the 45-year-old said. "Now it's packed with lines all over."

Danny Montoya, 56, also of Queens, said he was lured by the nostalgic value of the place.

"My dad and grandfather used to tell me about Luna Park and the old rides," he said. "I think this is just as good, just as beautiful."

have great memories when the steeplechase was open. Wonder if they would let kids ride those wooden horses like the used to.
also that huge wooden slide with the bowl at the bottom. great place to burn your buns if you slipped off the rug.

Been there, done that!

funny how we felt safe there as well.

really believe those days were better. Feel sorry for the kids growing up. We never started locking our doors till I was 15 or so.

FYI, George, the remains of George C. Tilyou are in Green-Wood Cemetery. I've seen his monument and have pictures of it. (I stumbled upon it by chance while searching for those of my ancestors.) At its base it reads "MANY HOPES LIE BURIED HERE." How true.

See http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=tilyou&GSfn=george&GSbyrel=in&GSdy=1914&GSdyrel=in&GSst=36&GScnty=2001&GScntry=4&GSob=n&GRid=3338&

One more time. Copy and paste and piece together the long URL:

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?

page=gr&GSln=tilyou&GSfn=george
&GSbyrel=in&GSdy=1914

&GSdyrel=in&GSst=36&GScnty=2001

&GScntry=4&GSob=n&GRid=3338&

Or just go on FindAGrave.com and do a search. It's fairly straightforward.

P-B & Crapper. Thanks, I knew his mortal remains were in Green-Wood (along with Boss Tweed et.al) I was referring to his metaphysical "remains".

And Good Night Mrs. Calabash, wherever YOU are.

I thought atheists didn't believe in an afterlife, wherever it is.

Metaphysics is a philosophical connotation not a theological one.

Philosophy is like religion. It believes in forces we cannot see physically. I am religious, and I'll debate you any time, you talking animal.

Stopped by Coney Sunday to check out the new Luna Park. Looks like it'll be pretty amazing, especially when all the rides are running and lit up at night. Very densely packed, though. Coney was jammed - it was more like the 4th of July than Memorial Day. Let's hope this convinces Bloomturd and Sitthead that summer amusement parks are a worthy investment!

Philosophy is a science. Theology is a pseudo science. Woof-woof.
