LIJ may buy St. John's Queens Hospital

From the Queens Tribune:

According to North Shore-LIJ spokesman Terry Lynam, two months ago Caritas and North Shore-LIJ signed an agreement that said North Shore is allowed to negotiate exclusively with Caritas.

Though staff and patients at St. John’s have been concerned that bankruptcy might spell the closure of the hospital, Lynam said that is not in North Shore’s preferred plan.

“Our preference would be to build a new facility,” Lynam said. “The exact location is somewhat in question. The bottom line for us is we want to provide a premium facility for the residents of Central Queens who, in our opinion, deserve a new hospital.”

Between the two hospitals, there are 400 patient beds. At St. John’s alone, in 2008 there were 48,000 Emergency Department visits, 7,000 surgeries, 1,227 deliveries, 14,000 discharges and 50,245 clinic visits, according to staff at the hospital.

A decision is expected Wednesday as to whether the hospitals will remain open until an agreement is reached.

Wow that would be an excellent solution - LIJ is the premier Health provider on LI.

the hospital needs all the help it can get, the administration has just about killed the hospital. can you imagine paying a consultant 1 million dollars a month, he walks off after nine months and there are no improvements to the hospital, it is still in trouble. they close an entire unit, reducing the bed capacity by 49 beds and the ER is overloaded now with no place to put the patients. the staff is overwhelmed and extremely understaffed and yet they want us to do more...ask the staff how to save the hospital, i'm sure they can give better answers!

How do you destroy a hospital? First sell it to St. Vincent's who then siphons off money for their own improvement, then sell it again to Wyckoff who spins it off to a corporation Caritas..hire consultants for megabucks and they do nothing. Close units, reduce staff, leaving patients in the ER for days since there are no beds available. Take money from workers' paychecks and then don't pay the union and don't send the money to the 403 accounts the employees set up. How do you destroy a hospital?...ask the administration for advice!

Bringing North Shore/LIJ elitist medicine to these sections of Queens will NOT adequately and appropriately address the needs of the local residents. They do not understand this. They want to use these as recruiting stations to bring more patients to their Nassau County ivory towers. Queens needs good, high-quality, community hospitals like Mary Immaculate and St. Johns.

North Shore/LIJ management are no different than the out-of-town consultant that was brought in to run Caritas at $1,000,000 per month. Don't kid yourself; there is a big cultural and philosophical difference among physicians on the west side and the east side of the Queens/Nassau border. Queens-based professionals should run these hospitals.

What a friggan Laugh, Id rather go to Riverhead
The Emergency room and NS-LIJ is wall to wall with pregnant females and illegal’s slooping around like any NYC hospital.

Most of the staff is interns, it’s a university hospital run like a greedy corporation
They also farm out most there paperwork to India via the internet.
..yea all peoples heath records, SS# and personal information included.

Queens better have top umbrella Great Neck millionaire health insurance or it’s on the soup line BEHIND the tweeds in the Emergency room.
North Shore waits to dig up the maximum they can milk your insurance company and co-pay then throws you into a web treatment and tests.
They are good with heart stuff and when a doctor is on duty

could not agree more regarding the VP. How do you take someone from housekeeping and make them a vice president of a hospital? Word is the VP is jumping ship...wonder why?

Anonymous said...

how would you not expect a hospital to collapse?all the administrators have no known experience.the vp was once a housekeeping super, one administrator used to be an ekg tech,so when the hospital is in trouble no one can give a straight answer. how can an er director have 3 assistants that don't do nothin and getting paid top dollars.get ceo that are rejects from other states, how would u expect to survive?

At least your VP had a college degree before she was put into the position.

AH has allowed St. John’s to become rundown because of her demonstrated lack of leadership. She has no credibility and no influence with her managers. She lacks charisma and can not direct a path for the rest of us to follow and/or embrace. Since day one she has kept all of us disconnected and left a path of un-kept tasks. On her watch, she has demonstrated a lack control, integrity, efficiency, and organization. This has created stagnation that has put us on the path to becoming obsolete.

STJ is in trouble because AH promoted all of her friends to become administrative directors. Some of these incompetent mangers should have been laid off or fired years ago. That’s why we are in trouble!

This board is incredible. One can only hope that the proper authorities are reading this blog and following up. It is very disturbing that in this day and age bungling people are entrusted in key important roles. As a long term employee, AH could not shine Sister Helen’s Vail! While the good Sister had her quirks, she was well respected, communicated her vision, but most importantly, lived the Mission Statement! When AH arrived the Mission Statement was removed in the dead of night and replaced with confusion. Get rid of AH and put the Mission Statement back!

AH is a poor leader who reduces all answers to yes or no rather than explaining her reasoning. She finds it a waist of time to find the real answer through an intellectual thought process. She mismanages crisis and has no innovation or progression. Proactive thinking is absent and she does not know how to think out of the box and make changes when needed. Since her arrival she has created an environment where mistakes are acceptable and no one is being held accountable. AH loves to humiliate or reprimand employees in front of a group, she does not stand behind subordinates when they fail, leaves people out to dry, as to create attention away from herself.
But when a consultant is around she acts differently, this is an indication of her low self confidence. She doubts her own ability to lead and acts like a child when authority is present.

Let's face the facts here. SJQH has been stripped by St Vincent's and Wycoff. The consultants should all be arrested. Someone should call the Attourney General to look at the finances since Wycoff took over. Our reimbursements rates are so low because we are not affiliated with a large hospital corporation. Let us not forget the physicians whose extensive length of stay causes us to lose money everyday. Obviously ther are employees on this site. Look at the big picture and not thru a narrow focus. And by the way things are noe missing from the hospital and I hope whoever took them gets arrested. You are disgusting. Focus your energy on saving the hospital and stop pointing fingers. We have a big fight ahead of us and we need to stay focused.

You keep bashing administration, but what about all of the fat cat docs who are the real reason that this hospital is failing. The chief medical officer lodha, gets paid $500k to put his fat cat MD friends on payroll and get's a percentage of their take. On top of that he has the longest length of stay in the hospital. Docs get paid by medicare for 10 days a patient is in the hospital. The hospital only gets the DRG rate. So big fat cats like lodha, and his buddy get rich while they rape the hospital.

Just keep emailing Andrew Cuomo and calling his office. He will have no other choice but to open up an investigation!!

I think REV AL needs to get involved. He would save the day. Hes a man of honor and is know in the community. And is well respected.

AH is doing her best soft shoe imitation. The truth hurts!

But she can dance for only so long!

AH’s solders are dropping like fly’s. Soon they will be gone.

You think we don't know who you are but remember no secrets are ever kept here. Stop the madness!! Lets just try to stick together and pray for help. so many inoccent employees are going to be out of work.

And I guess you know who I or we are? Which is it? We know that you are one of AH’s soldiers! Well, my co-workers and I are very angry and upset about the lack of leadership demonstrated by AH and her staff of administrators. They lack the skills and charisma to lead anyone. Why didn’t St. Vincents and Caritas see this?? Were we set up to fail from the beginning? Was this a political setup originating from North Shore so they can have their Queens Castle? Yes my friend you are right when you say that many innocent employees are going to be out of work. I am one of them and I am pissed about the prospect of having to go on unemployment and to seek another employer. I blame AH for feeding all of us lie after lie. There is only so much one can take. She gets the big bucks and should shoulder full responsibility. All we received for the 250k was a housekeeper, not a leader! The buck should stop with her!

Who authorized the removal of bankruptcy materials?

I thought that Caritas is in bankruptcy. Why are we selling off office furniture to another healthcare corporation? Why was furniture taken out of St. John’s and delivered to Jamaica Hospital this week? Is Annette Hastings looking to secure her future employment? Did money change hands? Is the bankruptcy court aware of this? Is there a secrete warehouse (like during the St. Vincent’s bankruptcy and Joe’s closing) where valuable equipment is being hidden and stored? These questions need to be answered!
