The Rockaway peninsula might be well and fine on the south shore (which was a deserted lot for 30 years) but areas north of the tracks and in Far Rockaway remain extremely dangerous. Not politically correct to say that but true. Also, a train ride takes abt 60-90 mins to midtown, depending on if you need to switch trains. At least they got rid of the double fare (used to be when you got off you paid en extra tab) in 1976.
