Avella predicts future of Willets Point

Arturo Olaya (c.) speaks at a rally in Willets Point Monday as workers hold up a banner featuring the business cards of the 200 tenant businesses operating in the area.

Avella said that if the project is approved by the City Council in a vote this Thursday, it will take years to develop, while businesses who rent their property will be left out in the cold. He compared the project to the College Point Corporate Park, a commercial business community just over a mile away, which the city purchased more than 30 years ago but only built up in the 1990s.

“That property stood vacant for two decades before anything was done,” he said. “That’s what’s going to happen here. This tax base that you have here is going to disappear.”

Avella: ‘Pull this project’

sp now there are 3,00 jobs there according to Avela.

He should do a little more research on projects he supports. There are 1500- 1800 jobs there for your info Tony.

What the hell are you talking about?

read the CBS880 article jerk off.

How do you know that 880 didn't get the number wrong? Kind of like what you said yesterday about NY1.

Anonymous said...

Avella said it because it is DIRECTLY QUOTED.

If anything Avella got the number wrong which is pretty pathetic when a politician shows up to an event pretending to know about what he is supporting.

You don't think the press misquotes people? It happens all the time!

Typical EDC asswipe diversionary tactic. Wow, Avella said it was 3,000 instead of 1,800! As if losing 1,800 Queens jobs for 10 years is a good thing.

Especially now when people will be holding onto their older cars and needing parts for them, they want to retrain these folks to mop floors in hotels...what a dream job!

Luxury condos, hotels, and a million more inhabitants by 2030 is the last thing NYC needs in the recession that is coming.

Investment should be directed towards improving the existing infrastructure: bridges (Queensboro and Throgs Neck are quite decrepit.), sewers, the power grid, buses and subways.

i can debate the facts anytime. I would be nice if our elected officials got some of them right.

Asking Know nothing commenters to get them right is too much to ask - but politicians who show up to events should do their research.

Of course - once the debate gets against crappy he'll just turn off the comments.

AVELLA IS RIGHT said...
some drivel in all caps.

Avella himself says he thinks the City will vote for the plan. Try reading the article before spouting off.

You have a habit of coming here and calling the landowners names, accusing them of crimes, but if they make a deal all of a sudden you call them "good businessmen."

You're full of some really vile shit, and that is why your comments get turned off.

Anonymous said...

Right QC - because name calling and criminal accusations are not tolerated at your site.

Unless the name caller or accuser supports your agenda.

Queens Crapper said...

Glad you just admitted that you take part in that kind of behavior. You target private individuals in your libelous rantings. Accusing politicians of crimes is protected under the first amendment. What you say when you accuse people of being in involved with organized crime is not.

what a warped interpretation of the US Constitution.

Please spare everyone your constitutional law interpretations and stick to rehashing press releases and news articles.
]
Private citizens who interject themselves into the public debate are no longer guaranteed any protection.

Queens Crapper said...

You mean they asked to be forced off their land? Talk about warped interpretations...

Saying someone is in the mafia when they are not is defamation of character and grounds for legal action. Keep doing it and you'll find that out.

"Private citizens who interject themselves into the public debate are no longer guaranteed any protection."

Pray tell, how did they "interject" themselves into the public arena? The City interjected them.

Anonymous said...

When you hold press conferences and allow yourself to be interviewed by the press you are interjecting yourself into the debate.

you really need a lesson in the law if you think commenting on someone in a blog is an actionable offense as defamation of character.

"Under the First Amendment of the United States Constitution, as set forth by the U.S. Supreme Court in the 1964 Case, New York Times v Sullivan, where a public figure attempts to bring an action for defamation, the public figure must prove an additional element: That the statement was made with "actual malice". In translation, that means that the person making the statement knew the statement to be false, or issued the statement with reckless disregard as to its truth."

I'd say telling the world that the business owners of Willets Point are part of an organized crime ring qualifies as libel. Only a fool would think that commenting in such an inflammatory derogatory manner was justifiable. A fool and his money are soon parted.

No doubt the many comments made about our mayor and other elected officials daily in the forum meets that test as well.

Sounds like you are in a world of trouble. No wonder you don't associate your real name with this website

Anonymous said...

Um, HELLO! Since when has Avella ever checked his facts, figures or fiction before he jumped in front of a microphone? (ps, never ever ever would be the correct answer).

Queens Crapper said...

Opinions about elected officials are protected under the first amendment. Libel against private citizen or public figures is not. Seems like the pot is calling the kettle black as you post under Biggie Smalls or anonymous all the time.

Anonymous said...

Under your definition there is a difference between opinions and intentionally untruthful, viciously insulting comments.

Any posts displaying "actual malice" towards "public figures" should certainly be censored.

Dont worry crapper, I'll be sure to point out any statements your commenters make that they
"knew .. to be false, or issued the statement with reckless disregard as to its truth."

Queens Crapper said...

You can't have an opinion that someone is in the mafia. Either they are, or they aren't. So where's your proof?

Anonymous said...

People who collude to commit crimes in an organized manner can be called the generic term "mafia".

"Mafia" refers to an organized crime group in Sicily and is commonly used in the United States to refer to people who participate in organized crimes.

Toxic dumping and and colluding to over it up is a crime.

Queens Crapper said...

Why do you believe the owners of Crown Container Co., Bono Sawdust and Supply Co., N&T Repairs and Shea Trucking illegally dumped at Willets Point? Do you have proof?

Anonymous said...

Either way bub...
with your "mafia" accusations...
you're skating on some mighty
thin ice.

#1. If they're false you get sued.

#2. If they're true (and "the boys" don't like you running off at the mouth) you might get "whacked"
or at least get a good beat down
with Louisville sluggers!

Either way,
you're a self proven
dumbo/ass-wipe !

Holy Toledo...
an IQ of 70 would be too high
for you!

It seems to me that the only true
"mafia" here is the Bloomberg Gang!

(i.e. "Shithead Shulman",
the "shifty Staviskys (both son & bitch)", "Liu-ie the lizzard",
et al).
