De Blasio said Sharpton has "stayed very connected" to the tradition of Martin Luther King Jr.

"You've carried on Dr. King's -- not only his message, but his approach to making social change," the mayor said. "You've shown that it's just as relevant today as it was 50 years ago."

The mayor also spoke about Sharpton's defense of young people brought to the country as children and here illegally, known as "DREAMers," after President Donald Trump said he would end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. Sharpton and Cardinal Timothy Dolan joined the mayor in a September rally at City Hall to support the so-called dreamers.

"That is another example, your activism is just as fresh, just as as powerful today as 50 years ago when you started," de Blasio said.

Habitat for humanity rehabbing Queens houses for MLK day

Habitat for Humanity volunteers are working through the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday weekend rehabbing a home in Laurelton, Queens.

Volunteer Craig Bannister told The Associated Press it’s a meaningful way to remember King.

“Volunteering is a way that brings people from different backgrounds — ethnically, racially, economically — together to work to a common goal,” he said. “So I think it’s important to really do that to remind us that we’re all really the same.”

Habitat for Humanity purchased more than a dozen homes in New York City that had been empty for more than a decade.

MLK crowds not fond of Bloomberg

Mayor Bloomberg drew jeers from Brooklyn to Harlem during Martin Luther King Jr. Day events yesterday.

At the Brooklyn Academy of Music, where he was one of a dozen city elected leaders and politicians on hand, Bloomberg was greeted with cackles, groans and boos the moment he stepped on stage.

“Come on, time out,” an exasperated Bloomberg said as he tried to talk about his education policy.

“For those of you who want to express yourself, there’s a time and a place for everything. We’re here to honor a man who valued education,” he implored.

Bloomberg’s attempt to compare his record on education — boasting of higher graduation rates for minorities — to the priorities of the slain civil-rights leader only escalated the booing.

“Thank you, that’s very genteel,” he said, looking toward hecklers in the audience. “You probably belong in — never mind.”

That remark brought a stunned silence to the audience, before Bloomberg quickly wrapped up.

Bloomberg booed at MLK event

Mayor Michael Bloomberg was booed by the standing-room only crowd as he took to the podium — the only one on the long list of prominent politicians to be booed.

"This is a day when we pledge to further King's dreams," he said.

Bloomberg repeated his pledge to fight to close loopholes in gun laws and also reiterated his push to close upstate juvenile justice facilities that take kids away from their communities.

"Thank you. You should applaud. This is killing our kids," he said after some in the crowd clapped after he outlined his stance against illegal guns.

But he was booed again when he said that President Barack Obama considers the city a national model of education.

"Not true," some shouted from the packed aisles.
