Hideous LIC library experiencing delays

From Curbed:

Just when it seemed like Hunters Point’s zany library was on track for its opening this year, the project has been delayed yet again. This time it’s because the project is waiting on a glass shipment from Spain, where a workers strike has delayed delivery, DNAinfo reports.

The Steven Holl Architects-designed library was once set to open by the end of 2014. Budgeting concerns delayed the project and construction only got underway in March 2015. There’s been steady progress since, with the library being fitted with its concrete facade last fall.

Now this latest setback means the library’s opening could be delayed to the end of this year or early next year. A spokesperson for the city’s Department of Design and Construction told DNAinfo that the project is expected to be complete by September.

But the Queens Library will take another four months after construction wraps to actually get the library ready to open to the public. It’s not yet clear if this delay will also escalate costs on the $38 million project, but it wouldn’t be a first for big name-architect-designed project funded by the city.Just when it seemed like Hunters Point’s zany library was on track for its opening this year, the project has been delayed yet again. Flushing has the Crystal Glass factory- that's as local as it gets. WTF, using foreign glass?

Hey I know lets build an expensive new library on land that was under water during Sandy and will soon be flooding during high tides.

Could have used that stained glass they smashed up and turned into an art piece.

Why couldn't they use a company in the United States and yes Crystal Glass factory is there -- who is getting a kick back on this --

This "state of the art" project is delayed and, I an sure, will be delayed again and again.

The day after the plans were submitted, the design and technology was outdated.

Why do we need libraries?

Does anyone actually read books anymore?

Why must we deforest our planet unnecessarily?

The vast amount of the worlds information is now available in the palm of your hand!

Oh wait, I understand, the tax moneys must be spent on campaign donors...

It looks pretty awesome from the inside.
Outside is little off but when the glass and landscaping are done it will look a lot better.

This is not the same type of product that Crystal Glass factory makes.

Personally, I only use Spanish glass in my home.

Great, more overpriced, cheap, ugly, Eurotrash designed on a computer.
Who was behind this shit so I know not to vote for them ?

BTW "Library" my ass. What your looking at is a daycare center for the rich people in those towers and the hordes of illegal immigrant domestic help they bring in.

Meh, it's only tax payer money. It's not like you ever run out of that.

Guess the bribes from Spain were better.

I know, computers are so stupid.

Who would even think of using one anymore?
We need to find that 1 person that doesn't use a computer anymore to design buildings.

The LIC trendoids appear to have NO interest in keeping with the architectural completion of this neighborhood. Trying to look like Paris's Lourve doesn't make the hood 'Gay-Paris'.

It is soooo Queens.

Hideous stupid architecture (which means some low voltage Queens party functionary okay-ed the deal - someone with no imagination and limited education),

over budget and over timeline (which means graft graft graft),

and a temple for official learning (which means that only immigrant studies and hymns to the party will be sung)

The only difference between Queens and North Korea is the architecture is better there than here.

I think this will represent Queens to Manhattan.

Its not the stale dated architecture of the early 60s like the Unisphere (which the Democratic Party has embraced as their raison d'etre with their pathological fixation on immigrants to the detriment to the rest of us) for it represents knowledge, design, taste, and culture with holes all over the place making it look stupid and useless.

- sorta like talking to a Queens pol that thinks they can weigh in on something outside of the cocoon of the Party.

I know that this comment is gong to be unpopular but....do you know any kid that still goes to the library? I see some seniors going in, but that isn't a long-term base. Why spend the taxpayer money on this?

Funding for libraries that are not commensurate with their use, is a BIG problem in Long Island and one of the reasons that their economy is in the tank. Business are taxed SO much to keep these places open that they are faltering.

"I see some seniors going in"

Believe it or no many of these elderly guys go to get internet porn in the computer cubicals. They bring USB thumb drives.
The the kids go after school for games, arts & crafts.
Its a taxpayer funded babysitting services disguised as a library's.
Same shit with that $50 million extension at the Hall of Science, its all after scholl games, arts& crafts, fingerpaint rooms operated by these den mothers.

This building turns its back on the neighborhood. And the whole bldg uses up waterfront property -- for what ? It appears to be a facade for the view of Manhattan residents whose apts face east ...
