LPC rejects LIC Elks Lodge

From LIC Post:

The Landmarks Preservation Commission has notified this district’s elected officials that the Elks Lodge on 44th Drive is not worthy of being landmarked.

In a letter to Assemblywoman Cathy Nolan, the LPC wrote that the structure “did not rise to the level of an individual landmark.”

“The agency has determined that this property does not merit designation as an individual landmark due to its comparative lack of historic and architectural significance to other landmarked clubhouses,” according to the letter, dated April 14.

The Pepsi sign was enough for now. Check back in 10 years.

Hang a refurbished neon Pepsi sign from the front of the edifice and the Landmarks Commission will change their mind.

Hate to agree with the LPC but the building is unremarkable (even before they butchered it). Lots of buildings in Ridgewood and parts of Brooklyn look similar.

Community disagrees with you but when does anyone listen to the community. After all, its not Manhattan

Considering it is the work of one of the outstanding architects for the time - but even more importantly, the community needs SOMETHING. There are a lot of stuff that is important for its place within the community.

Thanks for sharing your taste with us, hack.

If community people are holding meetings with Van Bamer they should let the community know about this.

Poor form to lock out your neighbors.

Interesting that the in the past 10 years, a big part of pop culture thanks to digital cable channels arose a thing called a "starchitect" and with it much of the over-development of bland glass abstract designs of the cityscape. One would think that they would recognize and give tribute to the architects of the past who paved the way for them and join in solidarity to preserve these original artifacts in a show of reverence.

But as someone recent said from REBNY

“There is no better example of free market capitalism than the real estate market in New York City,”

“This is a city of progress. Anytime something is gained, something is usually lost"

I like how a developer is funding a community seminar at a place that Jimmy meets developers that is sponsored by the library that got into trouble because developers were on its board and said seminar has as panelists no one from organizations that are involved in city wide preservation but chock full of city planning and architectural firms that work with developers and the topic of the seminar?

Jane Jacobs.

Queens is beyond stupid.

Register and rain on their party!

One of the outstanding architects from New York and it gets rejected?

Now they have categories for preservation like the Oscars: best buildings nominated for clubhouses are ....

The 50th Anniversary of the Landmarks Law my ass.

Look there is only one determinate for designation: your councilman. If they don't want it, forget it. Doesn't matter what Jimmy feeds the community. Its his fault.

Naturally...it stands in the way of development of the area.
LPC and REBNY...partners in crime! And our REBNY owned train wreck of a mayor needs to be made a one termer!
