Nothing illegal about hanging dead fish outside

From CBS 2:

Something fishy is going on in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn – and some residents say it stinks so much they have been calling 311 to complain.

As CBS2’s Alice Gainer reported Friday, a line of half-wrapped dead fish is hanging on the roof of a home in the neighborhood, and many neighbors are not pleased.

“Sure it smells — especially at that time when they hang it in the back, so I tell them all the time, but they don’t listen to nobody,” said neighbor Sal Felse.

CBS2’s Gainer did not smell anything on Friday. But neighbors along the stretch of 64th Street said it is worse when the weather is warmer.

But the stench is not the biggest concern.

“Rodents and insects — it’s very unsanitary,” one neighbor said.

“That side — they used to get mice,” another said. “I don’t know if they still do.”

Neighbors said the residents have been hanging fish on the roof for a long time. CBS2 caught up with the homeowner outside, who rents out the two apartments inside.

When asked if she would take the fish down, the woman said, “I don’t know.” But she does not speak much English, so CBS2 went to another neighbor’s house to translate.

“She says she doesn’t want to talk about it,” the neighbor said.

Oh please, these neighbors are lucky that the fish are OUTSIDE. I lived with a lady who would hang meat inside, around her apartment off clothes hangers, etc. It always smelled like decomposing flesh to me, but to her it was a delicacy to have meat that she dried herself.

Christ, it is not like Queens is some small fishing village or the wilderness of Alaska. It is shit like this which gives some immigrants a bad name.

A lot of reinforcing stereotypes here by some selfish chinese neighbors. And some blatant denying too. And using their culinary culture and a unwillingness to speak english fluently as crutches.

I'm guessing they got these fishing by garriston beach or maybe under one of the belt parkway bridges. And if that's the case, they better clean and cook those thoroughly. A lot of mercury and various chemicals lying dormant in Jamaica Bay for decades are surely there.

It's so horrible people still know how to feed themselves, isn't it? Next thing you know they'll start planting vegetables!

Wasn't Lucca Brazzi who ended up "sleeping with the fishes" in the Godfather movie?

The immigrants are not assimilating.

Queens is being assimilated into a third world slum where this is a common scene.

That's a great thing to do but in the back yard not the front.

I'm less concerned about the fish drying. What I find amusing is that the homeowner is renting out two apartments in what seems to be a single family home. There's only one door serving three living units. She selectively does not understand English, and "doesn't know", but she understands perfectly how to collect rent in american $$$s. And she obviously does not pay taxes on the rents. Maybe when she collects rent, her tenants can say "I don't know". She's certainly not the 1st and last person to do this in New York, but that last thing you want to do is create waves with your neighbors when you doing something potentially illegal.
