Rockaway candy maker hitting the road

From the Daily News:

Rockaway’s chocolate dreams could be melting away.

Madelaine Chocolate, among the largest employers in Rockaway, has put its 5.4-acre building complex at the foot of the Crossbay Bridge up for sale.

Los Angeles-based real estate giant CBRE has listed the four-building complex on the market, saying it’s “suited for redevelopment to multifamily, retail or mixed use.”

The facility was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy, causing about $50 million in property damage and lost sales.

The loss of the 65-year-old chocolatier — which at one time employed about 450 people — would be a blow to Rockaway’s economy. The business was the largest local employer along with Peninsula Hospital, which shuttered in 2012.

Madelaine owners would only say in a statement they could be moving to another location in or out of New York.

this is a huge loss for the community there, this proves that it's just too risky running a business or even living there.Rockaway is dying slowly.

Why would they want to leave the utopian paradise that is about to emerge here in NYC?

Didn't they receive assistance to make repairs ? I believe it was upwards of 1 million dollars. There was a feature story on TV not too long ago and the owner stated emphatically that the factory would stay and that mist of the jobs would be kept....

This business was featured prominently on a post-Sandy recovery documentary. Very disheartening to hear they're closing up shop.

No doubt they'll move to a more business-friendly, lower tax state.

Cuomo said there was no place in NY State for the kind of people that own that business, so... they heard him loud and clear.

They only re opened to get the FEMA money, SBA money and any other hurricane sandy grants?

When it closes the Dominican owned greasy spoon may close too. Thank you God.

There are no White Americans employed there with the exception of the owners.

What does that tell you about this company?

Send all the unemployed illegal immigrants back home.

Don't hold your breath waiting for an employer of 450 takes over the space.

The area remains at risk for the next storm. Nothing should be built there. The city should condemn it.

Who becomes the Rockaway's largest employer now?
