Bowne Park neglected under new regime

It seems as though all maintenance of Bowne Park has ground to a halt since January 1.

Here are some recent pictures – this garbage has been UNTOUCHED for almost TWO WEEKS!!!

This is the first thing you see as you enter the park at 159th St. and 29th Ave.

And this is the second.

Some garbage by the pond – courtesy of the brats that play ice hockey at night!

What is this thing? Too bad it isn’t a garbage pail? Just where are all the garbage pails?

Oh wait – found one! I was looking in the wrong place – it’s IN THE POND!!! And it’s not alone.

It’s been there for weeks – there was plenty of time for the Parks Dept. to have fished it out. Except that there’s NO STAFF!

And here’s a cheery sight – this little guy has been well-preserved by the snow – he’s been here for weeks as well.

And, finally, let’s give a warm round of applause to the morons running the snowplows. They’ve managed to rip up grass ALL OVER THE PARK! Clearly they don’t know its layout. That’s why we need dedicated employees.

Bowne park, like the rest of Queens (except for the newly yuppified areas), is in a sorry state of decline. The people that still think it’s a great park never saw it in it’s heyday.

One final question – why were almost all the trees on the 29th Ave. side of park cut down one Saturday by Parks employees? They couldn’t all have been dead or infected.

And where the hell is the Bowne Park Civic Assn. in all of this. Have they been disbanded? What is their function if not to monitor conditions and report problems to the powers that be?

Crappy – thank you for this invaluable forum.

Regards,

Flooshing Rezident

Fear not! Paul Vallone has appointed cultural and community affairs liaisons! They'll take care of this posthaste!

I often see 'flooshing' on this blog. Is there a reason for the spelling?

Thanks Flooshing Rezident for posting the pictures. I saw the damage done by the plows Monday. What a shame because it was just last year the Parks Dept. reseeded the sidewalk edges.

'Flooshing' is sarcastic for the way some people pronounce Flushing.
Just like the Vlissingen (Dutch pronunciation) was turned into todays English word Flushing. Someday soon Flooshing will be the new name.

Let's wait and see what our Councilman does about this.

It's winter. Nobody uses the park so why should Parks Dept clean it? Bet you will see a parks vehicle, usually a pickup truck, with 3 or 4 workers napping and keeping warm....and getting paid for it. Lazy as can be!

I never understood why it is so thrilling for people to throw the few garbage cans there are into the water and ice.

People use the parks in winter... They take their dogs put for walks and I see some kids actually playing in the parks sometimes too!

I guess too much for QB President Katz to deal with with since she has so much Jerry Springer/Maury Povich drama going on.

Thanks for posting those Pics "Flooshing Resident". You're right, it does look like it's been neglected somewhat. Although I have some issues. Why identify yourself as "FLOOSHING RESIDENT"? It has a derogatory tone to it, and if you're proud to be a flushing resident, why not sign off with "concerned resident", or something a little more proud.

THe last month has been a little rough with the snowstorm, and I would have to assume manpower has been dedicated in other places.
Snow plow drivers aren't Surgeons. They're driving these massive vehicles that's aren't know to be precise, but rather get the job done.... I think you're use of the word "grass" is a little loose, I haven't seen any real grass at Bowne park for about 20 year, except the one they laid a few months ago at the bocchi court. Getting the pics up on the website was great, but let's not exasperate the conditions. Im sure once spring comes around, it'll be great.
And in full disclosure, I live a block away, Im not affiliated with any political office or org, or clubs. Im just a resident of FLUSHING.

I was making a sarcastic remark. Of course people use the parks all year round. But tell that to Parks.

About the saddest looking group of "Community Liaisons" I have ever seen! Where's Adam Lombardi these days?

Anonymous said...

Go there during a snow storm and see the local idiots driving their ATV's all over the park and doing wheelies ruining the grass. Also, the can in the pond was dragged there by some of the hockey players as a goal. They never returned it to it's rightful spot.

What I can't understand is why the Asians are allowed to dance around with real swords by the park house?

Posters 1, 5, and 9

Exhibits A on what is wrong with Queens -

people so brainwashed by 'the system' in our little 'Hermit Kingdom of Queens' they miss the issue by scoring grammar points from a 1980s dictionary (wasted here)

and justifying something that (in any other borough) would be an intolerable affront to a community.

Hey, here's an idea...instead of taking pictures and bitching about this mess, CLEAN IT THE FUCK UP. I swear, I live in a city full of whiney crybaby little bitches. I WILL GO CLEAN IT MYSELF and post pictures of it cleaned(as soon as we defrost a little bit). If you can take the time to take pictures and post on this site about it, YOU CAN CLEAN THE MESS YOURSELF. WAH WAH WAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH, SHUT UP AND DO SOMETHING BESIDES BITCH. ALL OF YOU.

Kurt seems to miss 2 important points.

1) Most people don't have a sanitation truck at their disposal.
2) Taxes are taken from us to have this stuff taken care of.

I look forward to your post cleanup report.

I agree with Kurt. If you are in the park, you can clean it up. But you should not have to. If you have trash, you can be responsible enough to lift it. If you move the bins for goals...have fun but when you are done put them back. The overall climate of Flushing is changing. There seems to be mounting garbage and an increase of graffiti. It is on mailboxes and fences. Is it symptomatic of failing city departments or do people just not care?

Hey Kurt -

The dog walkers pick up tons of garbage at BP every morning, esp. on Saturday and Sunday at 9:00 AM.

We appreciate your offer to help and look forward to you meeting you!

Kurt do you pay taxes? If you did you would know what they are for.

Hey Kurt, It's not bitching it's holding city agencies accountable! If someone works for you and they are not doing their job, guess what? NEXT.
These people are not doing their job, cleaning the park ourselves is obvious, duh???? But most important is to get the City do DO ITS JOB.
You don't sound like the sharpest tool in the shed.

maybe the massive blizzards the past 2 weeks have had a reason to why it hasn't been picked up yet.

cut them some slack.

Yes they should have had it cleaned, but there were unforeseen natural blizzards that happen. its DELAYS THINGS, such as schools work people manpower etc etc.

im sure resources were running low. but yes we should keep up with it and make sure it gets down. its a park in the winter in the middle of a storm, its not the biggest issue jesus..

It was pretty bad last summer at Bowne Park.

People were dumping household garbage in the trash cans, so half of them were removed by Bloomberg.

Even so, seeing bags of garbage and dead animals strewn around the park - snow or not - is pretty rock bottom.

Guaranteed this ain't happening in Central Park...can't stand DeBlasio, but he's on to something when there's that much inequality in the way our parks are (or aren't) maintained.

Why should we cut them some slack?

They're lazy, useless city employees. And the local pols are a bunch of morons that approved a $750K bocce court that will benefit perhaps 50 people tops, most of whom will be dead in 10-15 years.

So please don't ask us to cut the city some slack when it's run by and employs nothing but a bunch of third-rate SLACKERS!

Does anyone know if the Park is clean yet?

You've been given your notice right here on Queens Crap Councilman Vallone.

Clean up Bowne Park!

The conditions depicted here a direct reflection ON YOU.

Don't try and pass off YOUR RESPONSIBILITY on your new community liaisons!

After all, don't you live here?

Nice park. Bad neighborhood.

Well taxes are to subsidize developers - you don't like it? do it yourself or move!

Welcome to Vallonia Whitestone.

True enough by don't blame DeBlasio - Mahattan has real civics.

In Queens they are involved in meetings that go in endless circles on snow removal and airport noise - and photo ops for the pols.

Can someone go to the park and see if it's cleaned up?

Listen, Auto-Correct - Manhattan has no real civics. They have neighborhoods with obscene amounts of $$$ and threaten everyone with lawsuits at the drop of a dime.

With the exception of a few well-heeled neighborhoods, we have to rely mostly on volunteers to stand up to people who want to mess up where we live.

I grew up in that area, we used to ice skate at Bowne Park almost every day after school and on weekends and some nights (it seems like everyone did, young and old), it is a shame that the park seems to have deteriorated in recent years.

BTW, in my work with a not-for-profit, I have dealt with many, many park employees, and found most of them to be very hard workers, many overqualified for their positions, and underpaid.

Part of the problem is that the City budgets have starved the Parks Dep't, particularly under Bloomberg (and Guiliani's budget spent an inordinate amount of money on Bocci courts) which rich areas compensate for by hiring their own employees for their local (Central Park Conservancy Prospect Park Alliance have huge budgets), so they are less affected by the budget cuts.

Part of the privatization process -- these groups (which do great work for the people they serve) get to use the parks for closed events.

Fight for money for the local parks (schools and libraries) if you want them maintained, and then pay attention where the money goes . . . .

The park was not cleaned up as of this morning. Now the garbage is buried under snow and ice.

The plows have ripped up even more grass and the walkways are solid ice!

Where is the Bowne Park Civic Assn.? Why hasn't that group contacted Vallone?

---

Manhattan people have self respect when a politician walks into a room - those pols are a hell of lot more professional than the local brand.

Manhattan people know how to work together, not sell their neighbor down the river to get some patronizing pat on the head like in Queens.

Until we get our act together here, and people learn to work together and get some self respect (remember all the comments of the brainwashed that a poster used 'flooshing' - and no comment on the state of the park?) then Queens will have some hope.

Until then, it is a place of broken civic culture where the residents are played like a fiddle.
