Bloomberg's folly

From Pardon Me for Asking:

After Hurricane (Tropical Storm) Irene, some serious basement pumping is going on over at Third And Bond, Hudson Companies' Inc new condo building. It was built right in a flood zone, one block away from the Gowanus Canal.

One has to feel bad for those new owners. This will be an ongoing problem for them. Hudson Companies probably don't advertise that little fact in their shiny brochure.

After Irene, one can only hope that Mayor Bloomberg has a better understanding of why it's folly to build more housing in flood zones.

If my developer buddies are happy, then I'm happy!!! Screw the citizenry! Common sense be damned.

Not a fan of Bloomberg, but have to say he dealt with what was expected by the NWS. Turns out they were pretty far off the mark.

My local forecast was for 55MPH winds with gusts to 76MPH for period of 3 to 4 hours.

The highest steady winds were 36MPH with most of the time less then 30MPH. We had one or two gusts over 40MPH with gusts under 40MPH for most of the afternoon.

The power of the wind increases as the square of the wind speed. So the storm was projected to be 3.36 times as strong as we received.

Interesting that the Queensview and Astoria Houses were not evacuated.

Interesting that the mayor went to Manhattan and Brooklyn and not to Queens.

Interesting how the news focused on Battery Park City that had little flooding and not on the Queens waterfront which experienced flooding.

Don't the boys keep a good lid on Queens?

Ah, boys and girls, hate to break the news but the mayor would not get far without his local enablers.

The Community Board and local elected officials to say nothing about the local newspapers uniformly trumpet waterfront development and will do everything they can to make sure you forget the threat.

And, dear Queens voters, by next Thursday you will.

"Interesting that the Queensview and Astoria Houses were not evacuated."

I think they ordered an evacuation on all NYCHA buildings.

All NYCHA buildings in Zone A were evacuated and the residents sent to local evacuation centers. If the houses were not in Zone A, they were not ordered out. Queensview seems to be in Zone C, and Astoria Houses in B.

Queensview (& North Queensview) are private cooperatives, not NYCHA, and yes in Zone C; y'all are probably referring to Ravenswood, which is NYCHA.

ps: 34 Av is the dividing line btwn city council districts, north (QV, NQV) to Vallone, south (Ravenswood) to Gioia/Van Bramer, except for the sneaky left pinky of land that gives the waterfront parks (Rainey, Socrates) to Gioia/Van Bramer...
