Traffic agents as personal car guards

From the NY Post:

The NYPD allows up to two traffic agents per shift to personally guard the private vehicles of fellow meter monitors in the Westchester Square neighborhood of The Bronx.

On the taxpayers' dime, the meter-agents-turned-security-guards -- who make an average $36,500 a year -- spend their whole shifts standing on the corner of St. Raymond and East Tremont avenues, occasionally patrolling the 15 or so cars parked there by colleagues.

The Post recently observed every one of the cars parked all day at expired, two-hour coin meters -- clearly in violation of parking-meter regulations -- but not one ticket was issued.

The meter guards don't even bother to carry their ticket-writing machines.

"[The agents say], 'These are our cars -- we get courtesy just like the police get courtesy,' " when it comes to parking, local businessman Raymond Lopez said.

Peter Hernandez, who owns a locksmith shop on the block, said, "Every day, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., [they] act like security guards. They told us once, 'We're not allowed to give tickets here.' "

The NYPD says the guard shifts are necessary and that 33 vehicles -- both department and personal -- belonging to traffic-enforcement agents "were vandalized recently, including slashed tires, keyed exteriors, nails driven into tires and windows broken," said spokesman Paul Browne.

"As a result, one or two TEAs [traffic enforcement agents] have been posted in the vicinity to deter the vandalism," Browne said.

Some residents say they believe that the vandalism was caused by someone who angrily watched the traffic agents park as they please for years.

The waste has been going on for years, residents say.

It's called a perk. Maybe if people didn't have such shitty jobs they would understand this concept.

We understand perks. We also understand when they need to be eliminated, as they were here, if you bothered to read the rest of the article.

This is an unnecessary perk...on taxpayers dime.

All they have to do is just set up video cameras surrounding that area where they park so they can catch the villain and arrest him.. (just like how they have video cameras for going through a red light).

They have brains for figuring out the red light problem , but they don't have brains to figure out this stupid minor problem ????

Cameras should sure beat 36k in terms of cost. NYPD traffic agent morons.

The difference between the perk (or courtesy) of the NYPD to park around their precinct while working, and the Brownies, is that precincts have designated areas to park in. The Brownies are taking up public, metered spaces. If they want the "perk" of having their own area to park in, they need to petition the city to designate an area wherever they turn out of as parking for official vehicles only, and be issued plaques just like the NYPD is for their personal vehicles.

That would solve the need for these glorified guards, because the space is no longer public parking, and no one can complain that the Brownies are doing as they please.

It actually doesn't matter that they are talking up a metered space. They are making the city way more money in 1 day than what it costs 1 person to pay for the meter the entire day.

Queens Crapper said...

Perhaps, but the point of those spaces is to provide public parking, not private parking for brownies.

Why does someone who *maybe* has a GED deserve any perks????

Anonymous said...

I'm confused. Why are Traffic enforcement officers referred to as 'brownies'?

Queens Crapper said...

Because they used to wear brown uniforms before they were folded into the NYPD.

For all the walking they do giving out tickets they sure are a hefty bunch in that picture aren't they? If I walked around as much as they do I would be skin and bones.

This is wonderful!!!

Our stimulus dollars in action!!!

Why bother generating jobs that actually create products that benefit society?

Let's just spend our tax dollars on - Personal Car Guards!!!!

At least it's a step up from - Community Organizer!!!

The salary of $36k is stated as if it is a lot of money. It is barely a livable wage in this city. That is unless you live in an overcrowded illegal apartment. And this IS a shitty job. Approximately $140 per day to walk outside in all weather and be the scorn of the general public. Not something I would do.
The funny part is how low these people are paid in relation to the revenue they generate. No wonder they are so miserable.

$36K plus union protection and lifetime benefits? I'd take that.

Anonymous said...

So why don't you Crapper, I'm sure you could get the job easily enough.

Here you go. By the way, it starts at a whopping 27k.

Do you know how shitty this job is? Let them have their free parking.

"Police" and "courtesy" do not belong in the same sentence thanks to the ASSHOLE "DECTECTIVES" AT THE 111TH PRECINCT. An unmarked car cut me off on Bell Blvd. and then stopped me when I turned a corner, and lectured me about "laws". They saw that I was furious with their actions and didn't issue a ticket BECAUSE THEY BULLY FEMALE DRIVERS IN THE 111TH PRECINCT!!! Traffic regulations are not in place for public safety, only for municipal fundraising through that crooked muni meter system where 20 min. costs $.25 and you always buy too much time since parking tickets are $ 65 or more. These agents should be doing their fund raising activities, not guarding their own cars. This is beyond asinine.

They can have it - but not at the expense of taking up a metered spot. They need to take this up with their union, not take it upon themselves as they have.

One gets out of one's work what one puts into it. In this economy, to be steadily employed, awesome benefits and even overtime eligible is a good thing. You get to work outdoors and walk around and get exercise, decent $$$ considering the level of education required. Sounds like fun to me.

Maybe they should have stayed in school and they could have a better job. I feel no sympathy for them.

"Do you know how shitty this job is? Let them have their free parking."

That calculation is subjective. If you were a dishwasher or sewer worker, you might view this job is a cakewalk.

Anonymous said...

It is not subjective at all.You only make 30k. Sorry but that is a shitty job in NYC. Don't tell me otherwise.

To the other people who think they are better than the person who does this job, go fuck yourselves. I used to do this before I finished college. Later on I got my CPA license. Unlike you pieces of shit I do not think myself above anyone else just because they make less than me or have a job like this one.

I am definitely better than the ones that make up tickets to get quotas.

who said they were better than brownies? Most of the comments said the job's not that bad and the brownies should appreciate having one. maybe the brownies shouldn't have such big chips on their shoulders and treat others they way they want to be treated.

You obviously must have cheated off a smart Asian kid during Economics classes, because you know diddly about supply and demand.

Should everyone in society who has a crummy job get automatic perks? What kind of bizarre-o world are you living in, North Korea? I'm willing to bet that despite the "low pay" for a traffic cop job, they still get hundreds, if not thousands of applicants. Even Wal-Mart, which is also supposed to be a crummy employer, gets thousands of applicants. Should we be assigning personal car guards to Wal-Mart greaters?

At the very least, your mother didn't teach you any manners. Your decorum blows - calling people "POS"?

Even I don't do that - my put downs are much more clever than four letter words.

And one more thing - I've noted your IP address, and I'm contacting the NYS CPA Licensing Board. Your license will soon be revoked - you have no ethics, and you're a disgrace to the profession.

Show me a job, ANY job, and I will show you a perk.

Re: first reply. No it's called petty corruption. You are stealing parking spots that belong to the public and by deploying traffic agents as "personal car guards" you are ripping off the taxpayers. Find your own legal parking spot like the rest of us. And if you want a better job, go get one and don't whine about the poor public perception of traffic agents -- it's confirmed every day precisely by stories like this one.
