Firehouse on chopping block rescues 30 pets from fire

From the Daily News:

Firefighters stormed into a burning Queens pet shop on Monday in time to rescue 30 cats and dogs, officials said.

U.S. Pet Discounts on Steinway St. in Astoria was closed for Memorial Day, which presented responding units with an obstacle - the store's metal "rolldown" doors were closed.

"We had to cut the gates, cut the locks and force our way in," said Lt. Jerome Farrell of Ladder 116.

Once inside, Ladder 116 firefighters were hit with heavy smoke, but they quickly found the source of the blaze, in the back of the store, Farrell said.

Members of Engine 262 fought the flames, while other firefighters, including those from the newly arrived Engine 263, grabbed animal cages and rushed the frightened animals out into the fresh air.

Wouldn't it be better to have a sprinkler system inside the store? It's better to have soaked pets rather then burned ones.

Christine Quinn's Slush funds said...

oh thank god for firefighters. no kidding, i always love firemen not NYPD so much but firemen are awesome

Regardings sprinklers, Slush Fund Christine Quinn, the animal hater, veto the bill that would require sprinkles in any facility that boarded animals. She stated it was an unnecessary business costs. last year 200 animals burned alive in a pet shop in the Bronx. This christine Quinn is one ugly fucking bytch and I hope anyone with a heart would make it a point not to support this bytch. Christine Quinn should fucking burn alive.

OMG this is where I got my puppy from last year! poor little innocent animals. i've known this shop for 20 years or so, always thought they were not the cleanest, always felt sorry for those little things in cages.

Quinn is real animal hater, that is why carriage horses are being killed on the streets in Manhattan. any place that boards aniamls should have sprinklers.

Christine Quinn has been responsible for the deaths of so many innocent animals in pet shop fires. She is vile and disgusting, and the feds are studying her slush fund involvement.

Wouldn't any prudent person, even a self-serving and narcissistic politician like Quinn, make sprinklers mandatory?

This is a horrible pet shop that gets puppies from puppy mills on Long Island.
The ASPCA has looked into it I heard but has so many other places to look into on Broadway on 30th ave with cats in store basements and so may other places in Queens.

HOW ARE THEY ALLOWED TO DO BUSINESS WITH LIVE BEINGS LIVING INSIDE THE STORE WITHOUT A SPRINKLER SYSTEM??

WHERE IS THE OVERSIGHT, BLOOMBERG ET AL??????

WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO DO YOUR JOB NOT USE THE CITY AS YOUR PERSONAL CONTRACT MILL?

Hi everyone.

Just wanted to point out that the house that did the rescue is one of the ones that Bloomberg has proposed closing. They went from Blissville to Astoria. So just because your firehouse is not on the chopping block, having another closed somewhere else can still be fatal to you.

That seems to be getting lost here.

Must be our astorians.com crowd - woogie woogie woogie to the wittle wittle puddy cat.

Adult things like firehouses and zoning and the like we leave to Vallone and Gianaris.
