Report: Stimulus money could keep hospitals open

From NY1:

According to an analysis by Weiner's office...the stimulus money could also help stave off potential hospital closings - St. John's and Mary Immaculate Hospitals - depending on how the state chooses to spend the funding allocated toward heath care.

Listen....you can use some of the stimulus money to keep these hospitals open, but there needs to be intense oversight of how these institutions are managed. To give the hospitals, let's say $100 million and the hospitals continue to do business as usual....... then I would prefer to invest this money in other healthcare related projects.

The stimulus money would be used to keep them open temporarily until another entity could take them over.

The problem is that nothing with respect to government is temporary. Once the government gets involved it keeps expanding it's role. Look at the EPA, OSHA, USDE etc etc....
On the local level look at any of the authorities.

St. John's hospital is the absolute WORST in Queens. In '96, my father was sick with pneumonia, and in the middle of the night during his hospital stay, a nurse came to take blood from him. Turned out, he was not the patient she was supposed to draw blood from!!!

2 weeks ago, my boyfriend went to the ER for what was clearly pneumonia, and they sent him home with a cold diagnosis. He returned the next day with such horrible body aches, he had to be held up on each side by my cousin and myself.

Summary: keep the stimulus money for the competent hospitals, and take these two out of their misery already.

Pneumonia is not something the ER is supposed to treat. Take it to your primary care physician next time.

If St. John's and Mary Immaculate are to be saved, can the stimulus money be used to revive Parkway, too?

Why not? Everyone's focused on the poor management as a reason not to keep these hospital beds open. So change the management! Require strict oversight! It's not that difficult, people! Queens needs many more hospital beds than it has now.

Yes, as with any institution that received gov't money, we should have intense oversight. However when you have a good percentage of patients who can't pay their bills and MANY are illegal immigrants who disappear when it's time to pay, the downward spiral will continue.

I guess your two little experiences outweigh the thousands of lives St. John's Hospital has saved. Try going to Elmhurst when you, your father or your boyfriend are having a heart attack.

no way. malcom smith gave 15 million to queens general, jamaica and elmhurst hospitals for the kill of st johns and mary immaculate. and are the hospitals, as predicted, overcrowded? you bet! how life is on the line?

Please review the New York State Department of Health website. The State Health Commisioner Robert Daines, MD announced $18 million in grants to ensure that the residents of Queens continue to have access to care. The distribution of funds is as follows - HHC 3.6 million, Jamaica and Flushing Hosp 4.5 million, North Shore LIJ(Forest Hills and Franklin Hosp) 3.5 million, and Wyckoff 2.7 million, and St. Dominic's Health Care Center 650,000.00. So much for our stimulus money.

Mary Immacualte and St. Johns could be saved, but only with proper management. These two facilities were designed to fail with a housekeeper and ambulance attendent at the helm of both facilities. How could anyone in thier right mind believe that this two incompetent individuals could successfully lead these facilities.

It will work only is Cataris gives up management. What we need is some 1 to go to the bankruptcy meeting march 9 2009 and submit a take over plan to the judge, Malcolm Smiths says there is 18mil. see MY FOX.NY HEALTH CARE.

Why not have Parkway open up as a specialty hospital doing heart surgery, caring for stoke victim and handle critical brain surgeries etc. Right now these people are being transfered to Manhattan. Why do people need to be unemployed in Queens?
It's common knowledge nurses and doctors want to work and live near their work.
You have the facilities, you have the staff and they (Parkway) have the money.
People will be able to stay in their homes and support the local communites.
All Queens hospitals would be required to feed this hospital in order to free up beds.Allow them to have a walk in ER but not open to ambulances with patients not fitting a protocolTBD.

Parkway Hospital?.......the same Parkway Hospital that was fined by the DOH several years ago for performing bogus urologic procedures....and more recently for bribing alcoholics with beer in exchange for admission to their detox unit.
NO THANKS!
