Drunk driver slams into RKO Keith's

FLUSHING (WABC) -- A driver heading the wrong way on Northern Boulevard crashed into a historic movie theater in the Flushing section of Queens.

The driver apparently lost control and careened into the front of the now-vacant RKO Keith's Theater at 135-35 Northern Boulevard just after 6 a.m.

Officials say his 21-year-old female passenger sustained chest and leg injuries. She was taken to Flushing Hospital.

The driver was taken into police custody and is being questioned on suspicion of drunk driving.

Eyewitness News is told he was driving his passenger home from a nearby karaoke club at the time of the crash.

Police closed several lanes of Northern Boulevard while the Buildings Department responded to assess the structural integrity of the building.

The 80-year-old theater's lobby and the grand foyer were designated as interior landmarks by the city Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1984.

Karaoke.

Asian Drivers: Its called the 'O' factor.

Idiot commenters: It's called the 'R' factor.

to meny chinks

Whatever the eff that means.
But you know, this is all predictable for QC. The article says nothing about Asians, and two of the first three comments are blatantly Asian-bashing.

Like drunk driving isn't a colorblind phenomenon.

You don't think they talk this way about everyone else? Go into some of their forums and get an eyeful.

Yikes, what happened to the Markee. It looks like something out of Tibet.

BTW the driver and passenger were coming home from a Kareoke bar.
No, license, regestration, insurence, refused breathalizer, gave some names with no proof of ID and evenually walked right out the hospital doors.
This is Unbeleavable !!
---Illegals of course.

It seems the city cops and judges only lock people with something to loose or they know they can fine.

He was really aiming for the Unisphere in Flushing Meadow park, but had to settle for the next-most visible landmark.

Could this possibly be a remake of that Dirty harry movie where he crashes into a storefront?
"Dirty Honda & Empty Orchestra"

The comments here hardly focus on Queensboro becoming any kind of laughingstock. They are instead blatantly racist.

And the fact that this concerns me is ODD in your world?

Main Street is a laughing stock as well as anyone that says it is not.

Face it.

What has happened to Keiths, as well as Flushing and indeed the rest of the borough goes more than a crime.

Now we are at a different level. That is a sin.

Bulworked by the barricades of the clubhouse bayonettes and its minions in the media and education, you can clear your throat and sit full of selfrightousness on some of the words expressed on this blog while missing the forest from the trees.

Get over it.

Only in dictatorships - one party states - is everything clean and tidy.

Welcome to America.

Where our European cousins were horrified that the driving rods on the locomotives were dirty and filled with grease, not painted in guady colors like in their 'civilized' countries.

'So what?' we said to them.

We have always been mutts a bit dirty behind the ears and rude on the edges. When injured you just rub it in the dirt.

Yes, I cringe at some of the comments on this board, and have expressed displeasure, but this is a public forum in the greatest and finest country in the world.

Who the hell does the entire world aspire to for the past 300 years?

Who won the race as #1?

Broaden your persective to the hoi polloi. Accept that neighborhoods and the people that live in them have to deal with many things on many levels.

And big deal if there are any injured parties of immigrants. Our grandparents were immigrants and some of the stupid things said on this blog are nothing.

They survived. We survived. And those little ones you care about - they will survive too.

An interesting observation:

If someone is attacked because of their ethnicity, it makes the front page news.

If someone is taken advantage of because of their ethnicity, as in substandard, unhealthy, even dangerous housing, we look the other way.

If someone is taken advantage of on a job site because they are immigrants, given no safety equipment or a job they are not qualified to do, and are injured or killed not a word is said.

Why?

In the mid 1950s there was a similar occurrence of an out of control vehicle hitting the RKO Keith's theater.

This time a "WHITE" male
had suffered a heart attack then lost control of his car
striking bystanders.

I believe that two people
subsequently lost their lives.

You can look up the newspaper accounts of the day for details.

I fail to see where ANY particular race has a monopoly on
driving under the influence of alcohol.

If you want to blame
anyone for the ultimate destruction of this historic treasure, the lion's share goes to Donald Manes, followed by his accomplice Claire Shulman for their REFUSAL to support landmarking the entire structure.

The early groundwork laid by the Shul-Manes administration later enabled the notorious criminal developer Tommy Huang to complete the job.

Let's stick to the real issues please.
