For many concerned about energy conservation, it’s a pet peeve: Shopkeepers who leave their doors wide open, blasting the sidewalk with air-conditioning as a way to lure customers on hot days.
Now the City Council is expected to pass legislation on Thursday that would impose fines on stores that leave their doors open with the air-conditioning on.
Doors Open, Air-Conditioning On? Fines Coming

Well, it's about time!
All of those Greek owned Euro-trash cafes have gotten away with air conditioning the sidewalks on
Broadway in Astoria for years now!
Let's see if NYC is finally going to clamp down on them.
Unless those mafiosi pay off the city's inspectors to look the other way.
I think its great but I doubt it will have much effect. Customers are more likely to go into a new store when the front door is open. I know on cool days I get more new foot traffic when the door is open. Big companies will just add the tickets to the cost of doing business and this law will only hurt the small businesses... as usual. Maybe it would make a difference if the fines continued to go up with each offense like it does with the tickets I get if I don't sweep my sidewalk quick enough.
This is an abysmal waste of electricity. This should have been done a long time ago.
Naw, too much for the three tenors (Eric, Petah, and Mic-hole) to take advantage the public's ignorance to blame Con Ed for their overdevelopment follies.
Look, like with the hooka pipes, the 'Mediterrian' establishments in Astoria (whatever the hell that means) will want an exemption.
And if you say something on one of the local blogs (we will NOT say astorians.com) the pain in the ass kids will defend it.
CB1 the community board from hell.
Yeah, George Delis will scream that
this new requirement discriminates against Greek cafe owners and demand that they're exempted from following this new law.
Hookas and hookers and air conditioned streets.
Welcome to Ass-toria "represented" by CB#1 the community board from Hades!
The sludge remaining at the bottom of a cup of Turkish (Greek) coffee are the local politicians !
