Rockaway beachgoers whine about fines

From the NY Post:

The NYPD is taking aim at Rockaways beachgoers — cracking down on minor infractions such as drinking beer, walking dogs and climbing on rock jetties, The Post has learned.

During the Memorial Day weekend, cops issued 152 “quality-of-life violation” summonses — three times more than the same period last year.

“It sucks! They’re targeting families who are just trying to enjoy themselves at the beach — people who might drink one or two beers in a red cup,” said the manager of a popular Rockaways restaurant, who asked that her name and establishment not be revealed.

“We’ve had cops drive past us on the beach and ask to see what’s in our coolers.”

She added that cops recently ticketed her husband for walking his dog on the beach, against the rules.

“There are a lot of areas around here, where there is real crime. They should put more time into that!”

And maybe you shouldn't drink in public or walk your dog where it's not allowed. Other summonsable offenses mentioned in the report: public urination and littering. Oh, those are terrible things to give summonses for!

Rules are rules. You either follow them or shut up and pay the fine.

yeah, i go to brighton beach sometimes and the crappy parts of the beach closer to the projects have glass shards in the sand.

dogs aren't that big a deal, but people in the projects have deadly dogs which have been known to attack others for no reason

Beers in a red cup? Focus on the assholes drinking out of glass bottles. Because shit happens. Especially when alcohol is involved. And then there's broken glass on the beach everyone expects to safely walk barefoot on.

Focusing on the dog walker? Unless the dog was aggressive towards a person or the cop saw the dog shit and the owner just leave it there's a lot of hell going on down there, and dangerous criminals to take care of, that's more important to deal with.

Rules are rules anon1? Alright but it's an issue of priorities. Would you want a cop to give a ticket to a dog walker while someone is getting mugged around the corner? At most have the cop tell the guy get off the beach with the dog. How about have the cops focus on all the dangerous and deadly violations first, then focus on the quality of life issues like the guy bringing beer in a plastic cup and the guy walking his dog on the beach in the summer.

You think even one tenth of one percent of moving violations result in a fine? Not a chance. The NYPD doesn't even investigate a tenth of crashes that result in serious injuries to or the death of pedestrians. You think it was probably the pedestrian's fault? How can anyone know when the NYPD refuses to perform even a cursory investigation.

The cops are doing their jobs they are paid to do. The parks dept signs clearly state what the rules are. Instead of complaining about the rules being enforced take some responsibility. You chose to break the law and you got caught end of story. If you feel the cop wrote the summons in error take it to court.

How about people follow the rules and then they won't be targeted for enforcement? How about if a cop is needed to respond to a mugging, he'll be called away from the beach patrol to take care of it? How dense are you people?

One thing I did notice this weekend at Rockaway Beach was that there were plenty of Parks Service Employees but NO Lifeguards and NO Trash Pails on the beach. The Parks Service Folks walked past an empty bottle of booze all day long. Of course I picked it up, but they just ignored it and told folks to get out of the water because there was no Life Guard on duty. Crazy!!

and when the police they walk past people drinking and walking dogs you will just say the the cops do nothing. police can't use judgement anymore because it will be deemed racist. why did you ticket just the black people walking pit bulls and not the white lady walking a poodle? I'm calling reverend al and gonna sue!!!

Please fine those who do not pick up their dog feces. start with the owners of pit bulls from the Hammels houses who let their attack animals run wild on the beach.

if it was only that simple.

but that's the only way to get revenue for the city.go after the simple offenses, get people while they are relaxing,on a holiday.

But there's more to this I believe.
And that's the mestasizing plague of gentrification.

There's has been a lot of interest of conquering Rockaway by the oblivious, subconsciously discriminatory, narcissistic denizens that make up generation gentrification. And A good way to start is by declaring a renaissance because they showed up(Camp Rockaway),or a bogus burgeoning foodie culture(rockaway taco). And what better way to get undesirables and uncool people out of the way than to scare people by using the NYPD as tools to scare them off. Those tactics worked pretty well to get people to stop protesting on wall street a few years ago.

what's sickening is that the beach is in trouble, and they know it.the delay building that boardwalk is intentional(especially since they only built by the beaches these pencil necks geeks go to),and the new sand from the feds has not made the beach any roomier. The next storm is going to level whatever is there now and possibly the future.

its also sick that bratton has the cops enforcing the law to protect quality but not to protect lives. How is someone drinking a beer in a cup(so much for being discreet)and getting charged going to stop someone from getting raped, robbed or murdered?Great logic there

and this blitz defies logic, and it is cruel and spiteful. And this is happening on the accused commie, supposed man of the downtrodden,Mayor 0 Vision.

it's time to go.
